Default [ASKED] Run-flat, EMT, ZP Tires

Hi Tadge,

Run-flat tires were first introduced to Corvette's as an option in model year 1994. WY5 was the RPO code which included Goodyear Eagle GS-C EMT (Extended Mobility Technology) tires. A few years later in 1997, with the introduction of the C5 Corvette, Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-EMT run-flat tires became standard equipment. Run-flat tires have been standard equipment on all model Corvettes since, with the exception of the C5 Z06. Today, Michelin is the exclusive Corvette tire supplier, using Zero Pressure technology.

The greatest benefit of run-flat tires is arguably safety and the ability to continue driving and maintaining control of the vehicle with a flat tire. Greater trunk and cargo space is an additional benefit. However, there are also a number of complaints. Harsher, noisier, less comfortable ride. More expensive to replace and require finding a shop with the ability and proper equipment. Decreased handling performance and increased un-sprung weight.

Could you tell us about the evolution of run-flat/ZP tires, the reason why they are standard equipment on Corvettes, and the challenges faced from an engineering stand point?

Best regards,
Nate Chandler
