[ANSWERED] New oil fill 0w40
#83
I've spent 3 hours today trying to find out about a service bulletin to allow the new oil to be used in 2014-2018 Corvettes. Three reps from the Philippines, one in the US. All they would do is repeat the same info that the new spec is not recommended for earlier C7's. Frustrating.

I was given the contact info of a Quality Control Engineer for Corvette from Mike Furman of Criswell Chevrolet. I've been asked by both the engineer and Mike not to disclose the contact information.
The good news is the missing information stating the new spec oil is recommended for ALL C7's, all years, EXCEPT LT5 engines, is being updated and incorporated into the dealer information.
The engineer said the update should take about a week to flow to the dealers.
Thanks Mike!

This is good news since I had a similar response from my service manager at McMulkin. Do not have a bulletin from GM telling them to fill with the new 0W-40 type and thus they used the 5W-30 on my 2015 ,Z51.

Check the label again, that's the Euro formula. Basically, that's a high SAPS oil and the new Corvette 0w-40 is a low SAPS oil.
Why they choose to put it in the ESP brand I have no idea; ESP stands for Emission Systems Protection and we all know how much the average Corvette consumer cares for the "emission systems". M1 ESP oils have usually been marketed for the light passenger diesel community who required low SAPS oils so as not to plug up the DPF, (diesel particulate filters.)

M1 reps at the 2018 Corvette Corral said that any previous year Corvette who had a DEXOS rating for oil can handle this new 0w-40 formula.
Look at 4:50 mark...
The real question is what oil viscosity is best for how you usually operate your Corvette. I've heard something to the effect that if your oil doesn't typically get up to and/or over 260° than the 5w-30 offers the best protection. I've heard folks run a variety of viscosities and if there is a viscosity/oil that offers superior protection, I'd be interested in going with it. Not sure if this 0w-40 ESP will be that oil or not.
If you track your motor (you should probably be changing it before and after every track event anyways,) then you the C7 track prep in the owners manual still says to run the 15w-50.

The Bulletin# informing the dealers to use the new oil on all C7's is:
18-NA-129
Have your service department look for it.

The good thing about low SAPS oils is that they are better for keeping the fuel system clean which becomes even more important with our direct injection. The only real negative is that low SAPS oils combined with the higher sulphur levels in gas here in North America mean that the oil change intervals can't be pushed as far as they would with those same oils used over in Europe with their lower sulphur fuel. But most people on here won't be going much beyond 7000 miles on their oil change intervals anyhow, so it's really not a huge concern for Corvette owners in that respect.

I am glad my first oil changes will be paid by Chevrolet as 9.8qt at 1-liter1/qt price will be big $$$$$$

Unless I've missed it somewhere, I do not see a document or Bulletin that I can bring to the dealership to argue 0W40 for the free maintenance visit on C7s prior to 2019.

There is nothing in the Bulletin you linked that authorizes the dealers to use the new 0W40 oil on all C7's.

In fact the bulletin specifically mentions only 2019 MY Corvettes.
A lawyer looking at the bulletin might even claim that GM is intentionally not authorizing 0W-40 for anything older than 2019, regardless of who is paying for the oil change.
I'm sure this will get straightened out some day, and any C7 will be allowed to use 0W-40 for both street and track. But not yet.
