But will it better than 15w50 protection levels for the track?

I'd imagine at some point there are diminishing returns on levels of protections. Stated better, I would say this obviously meets the requirements for track oil with the required safety margin or they wouldn't recommend it and risk warranty claims with an engine that costs $20K a pop.

I don't think those are the specs on the new oil, they are still the specs for the European 0w40 ESP from Europe. Note that this oil does not have the dexos1 certfication required for the Corvette, it only has dexos2, and it mentions Opal and Vauxhall, two vehicles not available in North America. It is confusing though, considering that release is from Mobil 1 USA in Texas.

Incorrect, read Tadges reply.. The 0w40 ESP Dexos2 is the new oil fill for Corvette.

Although Tadge said they are still refining their recommendations for the LT5 in the upcoming ZR1, the released 2019 Corvette playbook recommends 15W50 for maximum track performance.

So, unless I missed it somewhere, what aspect of the '19 engine is so stressed/fragile that it needs a uniquely formulated oil?

you really missed it because the new formula is just designed for better overall protection and capable of daily driving along with track usage. It is also recommended for all Stingray Grand Sport and ZO6 of any C7 years.

I think that now that more time has passed since the C7 first came out, they possibly realized the LT1 needs a slightly thicker oil even in regular street driving, so that's why they decided to not only put it in the 2019s but to also make it backwards compatible for 2014-2018. Maybe they tore down a few engines and saw slightly elevated wear and decided to nip it in the bud and make this change. I know that with my LS1 Corvette I saw lower engine wear numbers in my oil analysis reports when I switched to a slightly thicker oil (the German made Castrol 0w30 which was very close to actually being a 0w40 since it was at the very top end of the 30 weight range)

hopefully Walmart doesn’t sell an inferior version of mobile 5-30 synthetic.

Walmart is notorious for beating the hell out of its suppliers to get the lowest price and I know for a fact while looking the same suppliers provide an inferior product because Walmart squeezes their margins so much the suppliers will cut corners on products they supply to Walmart only. Walmart full on knows this in the negotiation process

having done business with Walmart hq in bentonville Arkansas I have no trust in anything they represent or do.

Mobil 1 does not have a lower quality version of their oil to sell at Walmart, this is a false rumor. Mobil 1 would never risk their reputation for this. They address this in the FAQ on their website too. Also, I have bought most of my M1 from Walmart and have gotten oil analysis done each time too and can tell from those results that it’s identical to M1 sold elsewhere

It's available from Chevy dealers. Just had an oil change in my 2016 Stingray with the new 0w40 oil. The car is under warranty; Chevy paid for the labor but wouldn't pay for the oil, apparently they would only pay for 5w30 in my car. Dealership charged $11.32/quart for M1 ESP 0w40.

Interesting. I'm not convinced M1 5w30 is the best oil for my street driven LS7 C6 Z06 and would be open to this. Also, with a 2017 GMC Yukon Denali with the L86 6.2 calling for 0w20, I'd much rather go with the 0w40 and all the more so if Corvette/GM is recommending it for all the LT motors in the Corvette.

I believe the recommendation was for C7 only.

"It is a backwards compatible oil. That means that anything that has a Dexos rating...a previous model year corvettes...can handle the 0-40."

hummmmm....tell me why would someone want to spend $14-$15 for a quart of oil that they don’t need when they could use a perfectly good oil that fulfills all manufacturer’s requirements and they recommend and pay only $7-$8 dollars a quart for it? Seems like overkill to me. I’m confused.

For those that don't "need" it, indeed it doesn't make sense. For people, like myself, who track their car and want more high heat protection than the factory fill it is cheap insurance.
