[ANSWERED] New oil fill 0w40

hummmmm....tell me why would someone want to spend $14-$15 for a quart of oil that they don’t need when they could use a perfectly good oil that fulfills all manufacturer’s requirements and they recommend and pay only $7-$8 dollars a quart for it? Seems like overkill to me. I’m confused.

Who says it's going to be $14 to $15 per quart? Once it hits Walmart it would most likely be priced just the same as the current 5w30 (roughly $5 per quart or less in the 5 quart jugs). Even if they price it at the same level as their new Annual Protection version of 5w30 that would still only be $8 per quart.

In fact, it often goes for $22.88 for a 5 quart jug. I bought a ton of it at that price last year for all of my cars.

You can’t compare the price that one or two people are seeing at a dealership, as they have always been overpriced for oil. When it is available in other retail outlets I would be extremely surprised if it is priced way higher than 5w30 like you are assuming.

Mobil 1 has always been the more affordable synthetic oil compared to Redline and Amsoil though. They rely on selling a much larger volume of oil at a more reasonable price. The version of M1 0w40 that’s been available for years has always been priced the same as their regular 5w30, even though for the longest time it was the most technologically advanced oil they sold.

Well one thing is for sure, if people are seeing it right now for $12 at their dealer, without a doubt Walmart will sell it for less, especially if it's available in a 5 quart jug.
BTW, it's 0w40, not 10w40 like you keep saying....

12-13 dollars for a quart of oil is not out of line with other high performance sythetic oils on the market. I have been paying 13 dollars a quart for 5W-50 Redline Syntheic oil for my Boss 302 for the past 5 years. Amsoil is also in the range. I believe Royal Purple is in this price range. Like I said I doubt you are going to find the new Mobil 1 10W-40 synthetic at the price you cited. This oil is not your dad’s 5W-30.

It's weird because it lists it for the LT5 and doesn't label it as Mobil 1, but he said when he looked up that part number it was the Mobil 1 ESP I was looking for. They are checking tomorrow to see if they can order it.

GM and Mobil aren't making this easy for us.
According to Google:
The 19353135 shows up as a 0W-40 Dexos 2 oil, but only on a website that seems to be for people in Europe trying to find parts for American cars. I suspect it's not the new wonder oil.
The 19370233 doesn't show on Google at all.

These new engines are foaming the oil more and heating the oil more, than before piston squirters and lifter bleeds, that spray oil into high speed rotating parts were in existence.

I'm still curious how/why other performance engine manufacturers are apparently getting along fine with currently available oils.

I appreciate your reply. The additional technical info answers my question. Chevrolet is far too parsimonious to go to all the time, trouble, and expense of specifying a special higher priced oil unless there were durability concerns about the engine causing a need for this higher priced blend.

GM is probably trying to do us a favor by allowing just one oil (the new 0W-40) for street and track, and do themselves a favor by reducing engine problems from incorrect oil that can result in warranty claims that must be investigated and sometimes paid for.

Not certain if this question has been asked but I have a 2017 GS and of course it uses 5W-30W oil.
The question is this, if I put 0W-40W oil in the 2017 and there is any engine malfunction, breakdown, is my warranty valid using the 0W-40W oil?

The very first post says it's recommended by GM for all 2014-2018 corvettes as well

No, your warranty could be voided if GM decides you used the wrong oil. Only if you use Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP Dexos 2 synthetic oil specifically you’re gold. Any other 0W-40 will not meet GM’s spec for the Corvette engine. This oil is available only at GM dealers now and should be available at most other retailers later this year.

Thanks guys, the only reason I brought it up was because in calling GM/Chevrolet I was told that my warranty book determined what was covered, they did not know who Tadge was and I had to explain who he was, just unbelievable.
