Been doing some research on Low Speed Pre-Ignition and it looks like our Corvettes are highly susceptible to it. It seems to manifest itself (at least on my car) as a bang or a shudder of the car followed by a surging of the engine. This happens mainly on the freeway during long periods of cruise control.

It seems that motor oils that contain a high level of Calcium as a detergent increase the likelihood of an LSPI event. One solution is a hybrid detergent package with lower levels of Calcium and higher levels of Magnesium. GM has addressed this problem with dexos1 Gen2.

Question: Will dexos1 Gen2 go far enough to address this problem, or is GM taking further steps to solve this highly destructive condition?

Supplemental:
  • Is Corvette going to have a dynamic fuel management engine option?
  • Is St Catherines powertrain going to be the build plant?
  • Will this new engine design solve LSPI?

You seem to be asking about something that hasn't been released yet. Please understand that there's no way we're sending this to Tadge.

addendum: did my first track event on the new oil and right away I noticed 2 things
  • the engine didn't get near as hot - in fact, the supplemental fan didn't come on at all after shut down
  • didn't have rough idle after a long day of WOT - in fact, I ran through 2 full tanks of gas and it was quite docile on the way home
Also, my lap time improved by 2 sec - could be anything - but for the sake of argument - we'll blame it on the oil...
