Was at the National auto show in NYC last week and found a guy showcasing his skills/install work there.
He had the Focal 3ways I've been thinking about placing in the doors.
Well....my opinion has changed greatly due to the price of these pigs.
I expected $2kish, but was then informed that the retail was $4500
"Awwwwwww hellz no"!! I quietly said to myself.
I'll keep my eyes out for a much better price or just be happy with the Utopias I already have.
I crave great sound, but $4500 will make my car go a lot faster
Scott
Yeah, retail is actually $4900. It's the damn crossblock and Be tweeters that are so expensive. Crossblock itself is $2190, tweeters are $1490. Before I went Be, I was just gonna do the K2 Power. 100KP + 165 KBE for tweet, mid, midbass. That's only $1300. This is all full retail of course, up to dealer to set final price.
I cannot believe that there is that much of a sound difference between, say, a $1200 set of CDTs and a $4500 set of Focal's.... I just can't believe it...
That is insane. Only a IASAC/USAC competitor can justify that. Let's face it guys, we actually drive our cars and the Corvette is not a quiet car. Most of us are getting old too, our hearing gets worse.
Now if I was a millionaire..........

Another reason it just wasn't worth it. I told the guy I'd almost consider it if they were going into a Cadillac or a quiet ride, but with the 3X Cartek head and cam package, long tube headers, off road x-pipe and GHL bullets.....it ain't happenin'!

not anymore... maybe 15 years ago...
The sound difference was actually pretty significant. Not enough to justify that kind of cash, but I was blown away by the imaging, smoothness throughout the full midrange spectrum and tight, yet controlled bass.
They are a killer set of drivers. Technik 1 told me the mid drivers and tweets were the same ones used in Focal's $90k pair of home speakers.
Scott
He had B&W drivers in that thing with a little 30 watt per channel tube amp.
All the drivers were in the front... the subs were in the kicks (with the baskets exposed to momma nature!!!!!) The mids and tweets were mounted in the dash on elevators. Wack. But it sure sounded good...
There was $25k worth of drivers in there, but the real difference was the sub bass up front and the imaging, which I attribute more to the speaker location than to the drivers themselves.
[QUOTE]Heard one set and was really impressed, but damn 4k or 6k or whatever they are is serious cash in my world Maybe someday, kinda like the new z06, maybe someday ...[QUOTE]
If my memory serves me correctly. At this years finals, of all the competitors that were using the Be series speakers (6 cars I believe). Only one made it to first place. In the sound quality only challenge, their two best cars went up and both were defeated with a well tuned set of Mistrals with TN45 tweeters. So it's not all about the price tag.
I did a search for "mistral" and got everything from windsurfing, engines, soap and bath to wines
Do you have a link for those puppies? I'd be interested in checking them out.
Thats the hard part with higher end audio purchases. I wouldn't spend that much $$ on something that I couldn't hear in my environment. Like home theatre equip. you can bring home for an in home trial before you part with your life savings.

Serious cash for those bad boys. G'luck on the new plan Scott

Thanks bro!
The "new" plan will NOT involve the Be's from Focal....
The Mc amp is going in for service inspection and I'm going to see what they can do for me. Maybe have some other stuff floating around with bridgeable power for the sub.

That sounds like a crazy combo, but effective.
I'd love to have more time and money to play with stuff like that.
The dream system would definitely involve Tube Driven amps and the home theatre drivers from the 8 ohm world would be interesting indeedy!
