Very impressive write up and installation. How is the radio tuner performance of the new head unit? I listen to AM/FM/ in addition to the CD and tuner performance is critical for me. You've got me thinking about replacing my Blose crap.

Awesome write up, I have a question for you guys see if you know. I already had some stuff done for example, had the bose speakers taken out of door and had 2 subs and 2 amps installed in the back. I got an AVIC-Z1 Pioneer Headunit that I want to get put in, currently I have the Factory Nav unit with Onstar and XM also have HUD on the car. Will this write up work the same way with running the Onstar into the dash speaker?

Reason I am asking the shop I had the other things done at wasn't sure if they could get the new Pioneer HU to work with Onstar but it sounds like Nomad has found a definate way to do it. I know I would lose the navigation directions being fed into the HUD but I have Track display on anyway so that part doesn't concern me. Just wondering if anyone has done one of these setups on a car with HUD.

If getting the connector and then running Onstar to center console will work then I will be one happy camper! Going to take my laptop over to the shop tommorow and show them this thread maybe get them stiring and some good ideas!

What's the difference between the D2 and the Z1 besides the hard drive?

Looks nice.

My C6 has the HUD also and yes, what I did to my C6 and described in this thread will work for you too.

Wow great write-up and pictures, For those looking top replace the door speakers we have a product that will make the install simple and is thinner, harder, moisture resistant and precut, it's better than MDF in every way

Great install. I have this unit as well in my '05 C6. I would just comment to people looking to purchase the AVIC-D2, that the Ipod interface is horrible. It sounds great, but the onscreen control is horrific. I believe Pioneer has a new unit that does this much better.

They are both GPS/DVD/NAV units but the Z1 has a DVD receiver built in to it to play DVD's. To play DVD's on the D2 you have to buy the optional DVD receiver and hook it up to it.

Thanks Nomad!

You will have saved me countless hours of prep and install!

I installed a Kenwood DDX8017 in my 350Z and was wondering if you considered this same unit when making your own HU decision. The only complaint I have is that I can not individually adjust the audio settings for each source. For example, adjusting the WOW on my DVD also adjusts the WOW on my Sirius (which sucks). Is the Pioneer the same?

I also mounted my satellite antenna on the dash, but I lose signal when going under an overpass where the Vette doesn't. After having it for a while, how has the dash-mount been working for you?

One other thing - I am curious, minus your custom built sub box, how much dough do you estimate you have in it?

That's what my write-up is for, I'm glad it helped.

The EQ and various tuning/xover settings are supposed to be an overall setting to be used on all sources. That is what fine tunes the stereo system as a whole. However, you do have a couple of separate tuning "options" along with separate volume control for each individual source on the Pioneer. Hope that helps you.

I too have trouble with my XM signal when traveling under overpasses and such. It is just slightly worse than the stock antenna on the top of the car. Since the difference between the two is so minimal, I haven't considered moving the new antenna yet. However, if you find your signal to be unacceptable to you, then you may want to consider changing the antenna location. Perhaps even use the stock location. That's what I will do if I ever decide I need to improve my signal strength, but so far so good with mine. *knocks on wood*

I built the sub enclosure myself, so it only cost me the price of materials….(Resin, fleece, MDF, etc.)

Since I also did the entire install myself, I only had to shell out the price of materials and components. The only thing I didn't do myself was put the vinyl on the sub enclosure and amp rack cover. I paid a guy I know that owns an upholstery shop to do that. Money well spent IMO.

So overall it is hard to say just how much I have in it considering I already had a lot of the materials I needed to build that system, but I had to pay for them too, just not at the time I did this particular install. So my guess would be somewhere in the neighborhood of $1,500 to $1,800??

Good luck on your new install.

I have a 06 C6 with Bose/XM. The XM antennas are in the mirrors and work well. No problem with overpasses, just tunnels. Do you think it is possible to use the factory XM antenna with the Pioneer Unit?
