Default front door subwoofers?

forgive me if this has been discussed but i couldnt find any examples anywhere.
has anyone attempted to fit an 8 or 10 inch aftermarket sub in the doors of the vette to replace the factory speaker and amp?
for me and 12 years of background doing installs in another life. i always like to get as large of a speaker as i can iont eh door to get the most midbass as i can.

i see that JL audio makes an 8" that supposedly works in a door. anyone tried anything like 6x9's or larger in the doors?

So I had these questions as well, and I think this link answers a LOT: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/audi...audio-faq.html

But to answer you, yes, technically you can replace the 8 or 10 inch if you can find one shallow enough...and then power it with a different amp. However the door isnt made to optimize a true sub.

And yes, others have added a 6x9 in there with an amp to power it. There is a company that sells a "bracket" to use the factory sub's mounting points for new smaller speakers such as 6x9s.

I answered with things I have read from others...im not an expert in ANY way. These are just the things I noticed from that thread above.

The resulting performance is just not worth the effort of sufficiently deadening and bracing the doors to accept the playback of a sub in the doors. The inability to get a true enclosure, let alone the correct sized one probably hurts the most, unless of course you want to go competition level, and remove the ability for the windows to roll down and rain to drain out of the door panel And to be honest if you were going that route, you would not be asking us questions, you would be showing us pictures of the install

In terms of midbass, a good 8" > any 6x9. I run a 7" in my doors now in a 3 way setup that plays to 63hz quite nicely. No chance that it plays below that however, not the right driver for the application.

As with all things audio, you may be able to have an 8" midbass supply all of the bass that YOU need, or even mount a shallow sub in there and find the performance acceptable. If you go that route, just budget in the time and $$ to deaden it correctly. Being that your name is bass mechanic, I have to go out on a limb and say subs in the doors is not going to work for you You won't ever get the clean, deep playback that you would want.

If you can be patient I am just waiting for an order of amps to arrive, modified by my needs, and more speakers for additional testing. I will be able to offer a full spectrum, down to very low frequency bass reproduction system that will play fairly loudly and fit in the stock speaker and amp locations.

BUT, if you want a great deal of bass, that may require an additional sub(s) for bass heads, I will know by this weekend, I promise

Back in ancient times (10 years ago) the way to go was to cut holes in the foot wells, fiberglass a box in and install 10's.
You probably don't want to do that, but..............
