Metra ASWC steering wheel control fix for new Kenwoods
If you have a new 2011 model Kenwood and are having some issues in regards ot the install portion of the ASWC from Metra this is the fix
Kenwood is using a very similar interface as the JVC units so the ASWC figures it's a JVC unit upon configuration. The Metra ASWC is self programming unlike the PAC SWI-JACK.
When connecting the Blue/Yellow (steering wheel control) wire from the Kenwood harness to the brown wire from the ASWC, put a 12K resistor in between the two wires.
Go through and re-configure (via auto detect install steps) the ASWC to the Kenwood unit.
After it's all done and it's got that steady LED remove the 12K resistor from the circuit and connect the blue/yellow wire to the brown wire directly and the GM vehicle's steering wheel controls are now synced to the Kenwood unit.
Here's clearer step by step:
1. connect blue/yellow wire to brown wire with a 12K resistor between them
-----b/y-------x -12K- x-------brown------
2. go through auto detect steps
2a steering wheel controls will not work with 12K resistor still in the circuit
3. Remove 12K from circuit
4 connect blue/yellow (kenwood) wire to brown (ASWC) wire
5. enjoy steering wheel controls!!!

What radio controls can you access from the steering wheel once the the ASWC is programmed? I was able to reassign some of the button controls listed below. The Phone disconnect button which is left side lower button on the steering wheel does not work and cannot be reprogrammed from my tests.
1. Volume Up (works)
2. Volume Down (works)
3. Seek Up/Next (works)
4. Seek Down/Prev (works)
5. Source/Mode (works)
6. Mute (works)
7. Preset Up (works)
8. Preset Down (works)
9. Power (does not work)
10. Band (works)
11. Play/Enter (did not test)
12. PTT (Push To Talk) (does not work)
13. On Hook (does not work)
14. Off Hook (does not work)
15. Fan Up (does not work)
16. Fan Down (does not work)
17. Temp Up (does not work)
18. Temp Down (does not work)

Last week I switched the 2011 steering wheel for a 2012 steering wheel and lost my Preset up and Preset down capabilities with the Axxess AWSC. It was working before the steering wheel swap. I can manually reprogram all the buttons but anytime I try to program Preset up or down it only does Seek Up and Seek Down. I wonder if switching to a different steering wheel control would work better for my Kenwood 9980HD.
Thanks

I'd guess that the resistance values of the new steering wheel buttons are a bit different from the old one. Maybe if you reset and reprogram the SWI it will work again.
