Kenwood 6980: Why is my SMS (text) grayed out on the screen?

Default Kenwood 6980: Why is my SMS (text) grayed out on the screen?
Hands free blue tooth phone functions perfectly, but not SMS. It's not selectable. The owner's manual has instructions on how to use text (send, receive), but no mention of why it's grayed out.
