I was wondering if anyone has any experience with apple carplay with it in your car or installing it?
I have a Kenwood DNX9140 (its a 2010ish model) and was wondering- does the Apple CarPlay require some sort of firmware/hardware that is not available to older head units? I keep coming up with searches that seem like it is not compatible with older units.
I would love to get the OS and install it but is it even do-able?
I think your only option is replacing the head unit with one with CarPlay.
It's just software though.. right? Technically the head unit is a computer that runs the software installed.. unless Apple CarPlay introduces some new non-compatible software with "older" head units, I don't see why not?
I see what you are saying, but for arguments sake lets say that Kenwood pays something to Apple to include CarPlay on their head units. This is all speculation, but if that is the case, who is going to pay Apple, and why would Kenwood be ok with you adding CarPlay? New options and features sell new head units. It's just the way the world works. We throw away plenty of good working items to make room for the new ones. I am not saying I agree with it, but it's big business. Millions of working iPhones end up in a dump when the new model comes out.
I would say it's more of a money issue. Even if Apple was ok with it, what's in it for Kenwood? They would lose money on new HU sales. It's like GM updating your car so you don't have to buy a new one. I could have it all wrong, but that's just my 2 cents.
My guess is probably not. Too many factors come into play. Even if all parties agreed to it, does your head unit have the capability to handle it? Does it contain enough empty storage to accommodate all the new software? Is there compatibility issues? So on and so forth. Stuff like that.

There is no way to do a firmware upgrade for AppleCarPlay. Like he was saying you need a new unit. It's a great feature that will just keep growing. The install is no different than a normal DDIN install.
