Default A new c5 audio build God help me!

Well ive just embarked on a full audio upgrade on my 2004 convertible! I have been researching for months and had buyers paralysis. I just purchased two Focal P25F 10” subwoofers. I’ll be purchasing and installing Focal PS 165F3 3-way active components for the doors and PC 130F coax for the rear fills. I’ll be power a Kenwood DDX99904S with the new JL Audio VX800/8i and VX600/1i amps with built in DSP like the TWK88. I’ll be doing the Big 3 and full sound deadening with vettenuts premium and soundskin or raam audio for the doors. This is no small investment so I’m asking for any comments, suggestions or advice! Geronimo!!!

I already purchased a set of A-pillars to try my hand at custom tweeter pods. And i will be using subthump stealth dual 10" subwoofer box.

I put a lot of time and effort into my build too. Look at my posts for lots of pictures. My only initial suggestion is that rear coaxial speakers are not necessary.

Subbing! Dude, I wish I could help you do the install. I'm dying to know how those amps work out...I was about to jump on a set myself.

Right now I’m planning on purchasing a subthump center well sub box for dual 10’s. Still contemplating the vettenuts corner boxes but they are pricey! Also I’ve been told the upfiring should be better? Any thoughts or suggestions?

i did review your build tread! Good stuff. I wish I could go with horizontal firing but the convertible won’t allow it. It’s hard to get a consensus on upfiring versus corner subs. Everybody seems to say their setup is great! I’ve never built a system so still researching.

My suggestion would be up firing subs. But you will want to sound deaden the trunk lid something fierce.

With that small of a cabin, I wouldn't even worry about the rear fill. Save your time and money and just do a good job on the fronts and subs.

I don't agree with others that removing the rear speakers is a good idea. Even the stockers are better than nothing. I've tried it both ways...and 100% positive you should keep the rear speakers. Just my humble .02.

That's the difference between "louder" and "cleaner". Sure, more sources move more air and make more noise. Music is only recorded in two channels (Left and Right), so any time you have two sources trying to deliver the same "Left" signal, you have the opportunity for misalignment and reduced overall quality. The best home audio systems I've seen all have only one "Left" source (which may be divided across multiple drivers to cover the frequency range) and one "Right" source. Sometimes less is more.

I get it man...I do. I just disagree. In my car, I've run just fronts. And just rears. And both. Both has 100% of the time sounded better. Of course it's subjective to the listener. Maybe the OP will leave them out, completely his call. I just can't appreciate 50% of a sound stage which is how every "no rear" setup has sounded, again...to me.

A center well box would be fine but I doubt you can get enough airspace in the box for 2 10's to sound good. In fact, they will likely sound horrible with a lack of the low end punch that you crave. It will be kind of a nasty mid bassy sound. The best luck I have had is to use a sealed enclosure that has a little more volume than what the sub needs. For instance, many 10's are suitable for around .75 cubic feet of airspace. I will push the enclosure airspace accounting for woofer displacement to closer to a cubic foot. In order to accommodate 2 10's I went with the Vettenuts corner enclosure with additional airspace added (custom built for me). They sound really good and in the cabin of a C5 more than adequate amounts of bass. One really good 10 would probably be enough if you choose the center well.

Ever been to a LIVE concert? Ever see rear speakers there?

The subthump lists the dual 10” center enclosure as having .45 cu.ft. Per sub. The Focal P25F subs list a .35 cu.ft. for 52hz and .52 cu.ft. for 50hz and .88 cu.ft. for 47hz as the lowest before going ported. So I should be at about 51hz. Now I know that’s not that low but my preferred music is not Rap but classic rock. Do you think I will still get a punchy bass that I can feel? The subs are 300w. If I go with the vettenuts corner enclosures that should only get me to 47hz for almost $800 more cost!

Well last weekend I drove around to see if I could determine if the rear speakers would make a difference. Of course this was done with the shitty Bose original speakers. So I would listen to a song and fade in and out the rears. I have to say that it did not make a “huge” difference BUT it does in my opinion add a fullness to the midrange without shifting the stage to far to the rear. Now the decision is whether the additional ~$450 for speakers and upgraded amp will be worth it? ....so many decisions!
