Default Hans or R3?

Going to purchase head restraint. Opinions on pluses and minuses on the Hans or R3.

well, unless you have a race seat and harness, the hans is useless. sure you knew that though.

if you're instructing, or using a street car, the R3 is the way to go.

I use a HANS in my C6Z that has Recaro Pole Position seats and six point harnesses. It is very easy to live with even without pit crew. It seems like the vast majority of SCCA/ICSCC racers I compete with use the HANS. Haven't seen a R3 yet. Not sure what that means?!

If you are running a race seat and proper shoulder harness mount, then the HANS out performs the R3 by nearly 20 percent lower neck load. There are many experts that feel that the only reason why the R3 passed the SFI test at all is that it relies on the test dummy's steel rib cage for structural support of the straps. You see that the steel chest area of the crash dummy does not deflect or compress when loaded, as your ribs and stomach would. It gives a whole new meaning to "Abs of steel".

On the other hand, if you don't have 5 or 6 point harnesses, race seat, and proper belt anchoring points, then the R3 may work better than a HANS.

Which ever you pick, lets hope no one has to experince the inteded use.

Hans or R3 should really only be used with race seats and proper harness installations.

The beauty of the R3 is it can be used with OEM seats, or improper harnesses.

How exactly is this device working? It appears that the strap around your chest is the main restraint in holding your head in place???

Default Isaac System?

I saw this in another thread a while back. What about the Isaac System?

http://www.isaacdirect.com/

Seems to out perform the Hans.

How well does it work in side impacts?

Think a head and neck restraint can never increase head loads? Think again...

Personally I would not track a car without these items as it is easy to exceed 140 mph at our local race facility. IMHO the first money spent on mods should be safety equipment.

I looked at the Hans, R3 and Issac. R3 won because I am doing some instruction and the R3 will work with cars that do not have 5/6 point harness'. THe Hans is limited to and dependent on a good 5/6 point system to work. I like the price of the Issac but the cheaper (?) model uses webbing to the helmet in lieu of their shock absorbers. When you get to the tested/better model you are almost at the R3 price. The deciding factor for me on the Issac was that the unit attaches to the webbing and is a seperate release function to get out of the car.

I hope never to be in a burning car, but bet you $%^ that if I am, I am going to want out pretty quickly. Safety personnel that come to my aid may not be familiar with the release mechanism and if I am unconcious, I don't want to be roasting while the guy with a pocket knife shows up. Just my $.02.

That is why some of the experts said that the R3 depends on the steel rib cage of the test dummy to get the lower neck loading figures. Of course our human rib cage will flex and break under hundreds of pounds of load over a fraction of a second.

I see they revised the R3.
Now there is a lower head portion, and a much wider lower strap.

I noticed my R3 will move more if I suck in my chest.
so I trained myself to breath in, expand my chest & hold my breath just before impact.
