Default neck collar safe?

Are neck collars good protection or will they make neck injuries worse?

what does racing industry say?

IMO for racing the only thing you'd want to use is a HANS Device or something equivalent and the various sactioning bodies will say that as well.

I use a neck collar for HPDEs. When you instruct and you spend 4-6 hours each day on the track, I find it does reduce neck fatigue. I recall previous discussions that said it didn't help in the event of an accident. Not sure why it would make it worse since it does limit head movement assuming it's properly fitted. Then again, I'm not a doctor (nor do I play one on tv ). In fact, I'll suggest that if they made neck injuries worse, manufacturers would cease making them out of fear of being sued. Even though they all say "use at your own risk", it still costs time and money to get a case thrown out of court. If it could be proven they knowingly put a dangerous product on the market, I would think the legal ramification would be significant.

Just my $0.02

Yes they are safe and yes they make a difference.

When you hit a wall and are strapped in your seat with a harness, your body will not move but your helmeted-head will flop forward before it hits the back of your seat. Your head will flop a lot less with a neck collar under the helmet.

Of course a HANS is even better, used properly.
