Default External Oil Cooler for C5

What has anyone done as far as installing an external oil cooler (not radiator type) on a stock bodied C5 Z06? Where did you put it? what brand/size? how well did it work?

The adapter block and lines are the easy part. Trying to find a good place for a heat exchanger seems to be a challenge.

Thanks,
Bob

I've been looking into that and I've decided on the DRM oil cooler.
Their bracket mounts the cooler in front of the radiator/evaporator.

I like this location because I can get airflow no matter if the car is moving or not. When driving slow in the pits the fans will still pull air across the cooler.

I don't want to mess with trying make my own bracket and lines. It may cost me a bit more to buy the whole setup but I figure my time (and lack of frustration) is worth it.

I also purchased the DRM oil cooler and a Mocal thermostat. Their kit was complete and the instructions allowed fairly easy installation. In August last year at VIR I was running high 280-290 deg temps at the end of a session. After the install I am running high 240's. A very worthwhile longevity investment. The thermnostat allows use in the winter and keeps the oil in the 180 deg range before routing to the cooler.

DRM also - they supply a bracked to mount it in front of the radiator. A friend has the same setup...don't expect low temps though - we were both in the 270's in 85-90 degree weather. It's MUCH better than the temps we would have seen without it.

I too have an external oil cooler and Mocal thermostat. Both are located in front of the radiator/air conditioning condenser (not an ideal location for the thermostat). I had oil temps around 164 while cruising on the highway with the 180 deg oil thermostat. I then ordered another Mocal thermostat with a higher activation temp. Around 203 degF if I recall correctly. It was Mocal's highest temp thermostat. My temps on the highway are now right around stock while on the highway. It does nice on the track too.

Bob, your guys have worked on my car a couple of times. Great guys.

Bob, I have the LPE cooler. Its mounted over the front sway bar. Not the best spot but it was just south of 100 at VIR this weekend and it never went over 258, and while I may be slower on track then a Detroit welfare mother looking for a job, I do abuse the car.

Had to modify the mount as it does not fit with a T1 bar the way it arrived.

Check out the install guide I put together for an EOC with a thermostat:

http://www.brazosrivercc.com/Tips.html

Drops oil temps about 30-35 degrees, and cool down is much more effective.

HTH, and have a good one,
Mike

Don't question it do this ^

My DRM external kit lowered my oil temps considerably...it was a great mod. I only regreted not doing the radiator cooler in the end, but the kit performed fantastic.

Mine is in front of the radiator. It limits oil temps to around 258-260 even under hard driving conditions on hot, humid days in Texas. That's all I need. No thermostat, as I wanted to keep the system simple. It's a DRM cooler and lines. Takes a bit for the car to warm up in the winter, but that's what? Two months down here?

I am very interested in this. As this is my first year in the Z06 I've learned it really does get quite hot here in summer. Naturally I was hoping to avoid this as it will take me out of SCCA's SS class. But ASP allows me to do a few more fun mods and I think I won't be going back to Nationals any time soon.

I have a TPIS oil cooler, fits good, easy to install. Took my 300+ degree temps down to around 260-265 on track.
