Default AMB Tansponder Installation DIY

I just finished installing a direct wire AMB transponder. I decided that I am the type to forget to charge batteries, so I wanted the transponder to be running anytime the ignition is on.

First step was easy. Just like owners manual said, there is a plug and pigtail in the passenger side foot well behind the kick panel. The panel has Velcro at the top and hinges down. You can see the connector at the top left corner. See the Yellow and Orange wires?

The connector pigtail has Yellow, Orange and Black wires taped together. Push down on the little lever to unlock and unplug the connector. The pigtail connector is off in the photo below.

The Yellow is hot when the ignition is on, black is ground and the orange is hot all the time. I cut the wire ends to unequal lengths so the solder joints would not line up and taped the joints with electrical tape afterward. Red to Yellow and Black to Black

I pulled the sill cover off and drilled two small holes to attach the transponder with #6 screws. The sill cover is plugged in and can be removed by just pulling up.

Snap sill cover back in place and all is done. Turn key in ignition and indicator light on transponder lights!

I felt under car directly below the transponder and it is the balsa/plastic panel.

Nice DIY install..

Would the transponder work fine if it was hidden inside a panel or something like that?

Any thoughts on the optional display

I thought the transponder had to "see" the racing surface to pick up the scoring loop. Mine is mounted on the inside frame rail under the master cylinder

I've been wondering if that display would work as a track-side hand-held unit. I don't really want to watch lap times while I drive (I'm racing the track, not the lap timer!), but it would be nice for my crew cheif to see lap times. If it's 9V powerable, s/b easy to rig something up. Anybody else do this?

Yep. 24" above the road surface is the centerline of the Z06 emblem on the fender and would be almost dashboard height.

As far as I know the plastic/balsa floor panel below is transparent to signals. I had no problems at Road America last fall. Timed every lap of every session.

My neighbor has a battery powered AMB and he just zip tied it to the inside passenger door handle, which also works.

Would it work inside the panel? Maybe not, as the frame rail is directly below that area and might block the signal. You could mount it there with duct tape at your first outing and move it if it doesn't work.

I like it where it is. It really isn't noticeable, but yet I can see the indicator light to reassure myself that it is powered up. I took the last picture with the camera down on the camera.

Mine is a 2002. I thought I just read something about 2004 cars not having this pigtail available. Check your owners manual.

The duct tape would be a good idea to experiment with. Also, I am sure I could buy add a fuse or something like that for my car.

I just went to Gene Culley's website and looked at owners manuals. The Accessory Power Plug information was in the 2002 & 2003 manuals, but not in the 2004.

Same with 2007. Seems like maybe GM got cold feet and decided not to make it easy to hook up to ignition on circuit. A piggyback fuse and toggle switch would work.

Thanks for looking that up

I've been putting a rental (rechargeable) in the rear storage well. No problems at all. I just stuff some towels to keep it from bouncing.

Once I get the parts..will go to Auto Zone and get a piggyback fuse and toggle switch...will see how it works and where to hide the transponder
