Default Speaking of hot oil...

The other thread seems to have fizzled out so I thought I should ask my question here. I saw 293* oil temps this weekend at Barber. I'm going to add an oil cooler, but my car is street driven mostly. I have heard that the radiator with itegrated oil cooler is more street friendly. I'm looking at the DeWitts unit and was wondering if any of you have any direct experience with it and how much does it actually help on the track.

BTW - C5ZO6

Thanks.
SP

I've got the ron davis unit with the EOC built in. Last time I was on the track my oil temps never went over 225 (was a cool day).

Do you have any before and after oil temp comparisons?

Try one of our LG Super Cool Radiators, these have been tested and track proven for years.

These are the exact same units that you will find in all of our high HP street cars all the way up to World Challenge Powered Corvette's. Leighton Reese even had them in his car as well.

Typicaly we will see 20 degree drop in oil temp, and 30 degree in coolant.

I have these in stock, give us a call or shoot me a PM if you have any questions.

Default Hot Oil

I have a C6 Z51 with a Dewitts Radiator with integrated engine oil and trans cooler. Before 295 F, after 235 F max oil track temps. 200 F max oil street temp. Before 245 F max water temp, after 210 F max track temp with a 160 F thermostat. Dewitts is a better street /track combo. Ron Davis's is a better track radiator. (better with higher air flow). I'm very happy with the Dewitts radiator.

We have the Dewitt radiator with passenger side oil cooler on the FRC. The highest oil temp we saw all weekend was 269 - mostly in 250s. The fastest lap time was 1:43.695 (new TTA record I might add).

In the summer time up at Willow Springs or Buttonwillow it could be 110F outside. Felt even hotter on the pavement!

A few hard laps would put both the C4 & the C5 oil temp range in the 290-300F range very quickly. I would have to back off and let things stay cool. I never had a problem with cooling temps.

After install of an intergrated EOC the coolant temp was slightly lower and the oil temp would rarely exceed 260F range. I never got around to changing out to a lower thermostat and reprogramming the fans as I wanted to do with the setup. It did however allow me to run hard all day long! When its cooler out even better!

I saw about 25deg drops in oil after my Dewitts cooler. IMO cleaning the radiator well and directing the air through it well does as much as anything for the coolant.

Ron Davis with rt side integrated EOC here and DRM line kit.
Street ~ 20 degrees less on oil temp
Track ~ 40 degrees less (Equal ambient temp ... saw close to 290 before; after ... not over 250.

Thanks guys. It looks like the Dewitts is a good choice for me.
Now I just have to dig around through the shop and find a few things I can sell to support my track habit.
Anybody need a '68 convertible?

Good thread. Can anyone explain why an integrated oil cooler attached to the radiator is more streat/track friendly rather than the stand alone external oil cooler? New to the track game and trying to do things right the 1st time... Thanks

water conducts heat 25+ times more than air

air makes a great insulator, thats why we have an atmosphere

Separate is *better* for optimizing and matching components to requirements. Many add separate OC and keep stock rad if staying NA on engine.
Integrated is *simpler*, more costly, (you're buying a whole radiator upgrade)
Options on separate EOC:

Liquid/Liquid heat exchangers are very efficient - IOC are a liquid/liquid/air...

Oh yeah forgot....the radiator oil cooler also keeps the oil warm in the winter driving months
