Default Failure due to high tranny or diff temps C5/C6

Has anyone had a differential or transmission fail as a result of high fluid temps?

Also, has anyone ever gotten the engine oil temp alarm to go off?

I went through the clutch plates on my stock diff and then went to a Quaife. It is into its second season and going strong. It has a diff cooler that was not originally there.

My #22 has an extra oil cooler and it never gets hot. My Z16 never had an oil cooler and it got really hot in 25 minute sessions, but I never got that alert that I recall.... I bet it would on 100 degree Willow Springs days though.

With only +50 HP over stock my '03 Z06 got tranny warning and engine oil was well above 300 at Putnam with only ambient 85 degree day.

I have since added oil cooler and tranny cooler at front of car radiator. I have never seen oil above 285, ususally only 275, and tranny warning does not come on (I did plumb with sensor still in the tranny).

I think someone makes a stronger rear tranny plate with radiating fins cast into place to help some but I can't remember who or if it does very good job. The problem with hot tranny is from the diff. conducting heat to it since it is co-located so it still gets mighty warm...

We have seen all the warnings before. Back in 97 we rented Blackhawk farms for two days. With Doug at the wheel, we had the car melted down before mid day, the first day. Well we loaded the car back up on the trailer and went to work.

Clutch packs in the diff are the most damaged during the hot. Bearings and gears can also be damaged during extended extreme heat. Have you ever seen 6th gear melted together, thanks to the autobaun we have.

Here is the fix to all your tranny and diff problems!!!

Thanks

I had a tranny bearing go out during an HPDE a few months back. It took out 5th gear and damaged some other stuff. I can only assume it was due to temp. No lights or warnings.

Think transmission temp alarm goes at 276F? Not sure on oil. I heard the LS6 was tested to 300 F oil temp, but that was something I heard on the forum. I've not had mine over 300 F, ever.

Are you able to view tranny temp on the DIC in a C5Z06?

The C6Z51 manual tranny temp does not have a DIC entry, so I am not even sure if it has a sensor.

Anyone know for sure?

9 years ago when I was running my 97 I took it to Watkins Glen for a 2 day event. The first day was hot, dry and fast. Had lots of track time. The second day it rained so I decided to drive down into town to get gas while driving down the highway at about 50 mph with the windows closed I heard the rear end whining. It hadn't done that 2 days before and was impossible to hear when driving with the windows open. The bearings were definitely cooked and GM replaced the diff under warranty. I got myself some coolers after that.

It is his (large) cool head that keeps temps down...

I destroyed a tranny at VIR. The warning comes on at 275 I believe. After this, it will show the trans oil temp instead of the engine oil temp on the DIC. (C5z06)

Interesting. I checked my shop manual, and there is indeed a tranny temp sensor on my C6 Z51. There is not a diff temp sensor though. The wires coming out of it are a speed sensor IIRC.

Thanks, but in my case, it is probably more due to the engine and the tires than the driver, but I'm working on it......

My engine oil temp hit the warning a couple of times at Streets of Willow last weekend, maybe 90 degrees outside. Came on at 320. It was really hard to keep temps under 300 even if I held way back. Engine temps got up to I think 250 as well while I wasn't looking. Haven't seen the tranny warning yet but you guys are starting to scare me a bit...

But then I went on a landscaping excursion and broke my rad, so I have a DeWitt's coming next week.

Hope the tranny cooler in that is an upgrade over stock. The engine oil cooler seems to work well from what I've heard.

By the way all this was with my stock z51 air to liquid oil cooler. Seems pretty useless to me...
