Track Day near Maine?
Hi,
Kind of interested in getting out on the track with my Z06, but I have absolutely no experience. I'm not really looking to race, just be able to run around a track for a bit in as low pressure situation as possible. I'd rather not do a school but that may be my only choice. Any suggestions?

Its a long way from Bangor to anywhere! If I can go to Bar Harbor to eat and drink and ride a cool Cat boat to Nova Scotia, you can come to Loudon to drive. It is only 221 miles, I drove 2x that to go to NJMP 2 weeks ago.

Well I'll work on it. Is it possible for your car to not meet tech inspection and not be able to run? Mine has 31,000 miles on it, but it is almost 8 years old so who knows.
Also, the previous owner put 245 and 275 run flats on it.

For your first day, no problem. The tech inspection is for basic safety things. Does it pass Maine state inspection? You need the tires to be in good shape no cords showing, brakes in good shape (plenty of pads left, no fluids leaking), nothing loose like the battery,no fluids leaking, etc. It is pretty easy, as long as it is not a total POS. BTW, my 06 Z06 has 22K miles on it.

I have been a COMSCC member since 1990. Also a good club, but more **** than others for rules and classifications. Most SCCA champs in New England started with COM. You have no excuse not to get in an event at NHMS this year between COM and SCDA! There is not a track planned near Bangor anytime soon! You have 2 seasons, Winter, and the 4th of July, right?

I'll second SCDA as being a good group to run with; well run events, nice people. Go at a comfortable pace and work on the basics to get started. Don't hesitate to take the longer drive down to Lime Rock... a beatiful course, just repaved, and a lot less concrete to hit! One tip though, even for first time; change your brake fluid and replace it with something good like DTE, SRF, etc. Old brake fluid has moisture and boils a lot easier. A brake pad upgrade isn't a bad idea either, but first time out it's not manditory. Most of all, do it, have fun with it! (There is a LRP event with SCDA open to first timers on 10/9)

Could I expect to have anything left of my brakes and rotors after the day is done? From reading other posts on the forum, it sounds like you guys change rotors like underwear.

For your first day, no. You will be a bit overwhelmed for that. I will keep you off the wall, none of my students have ever hurt their cars. New brake fluid and pads is a great idea. You will spend alot of time in my car if you come to NHMS.

Hmm you are persuasive. I will do my best. If I don't make it I appreciate all your help and if I make it on another occasion, don't hold it against me please!

Another vote for NHMS with SCDA.
I will be headed there on the 22nd also.
Gary is a great instructor to have, he will definatley show you the ropes and keep you off the walls, (trust me, I know).
