GPS lap timing-on your phone.
After my last event I'm getting the urge to track my lap times again. I don't want a track side beacon as they are a PITA and many DE groups won't allow them. A web search of "gps lap timers" uncovered some interesting apps for smart phones.
Harrys lap timer This app is for palm based os.
iLap A beta version for Windows Moble.
RaceChrono For Nokia smart phones.
Anyone had any experience with this concept? Seems like a great, low (or no) cost solution if you've already got the phone.

Can't speak to the phone, but you can use something like this... It will store and compare your lap times. It was designed for a bike, but will work in a car.

Funny I just started to look into this since my bb storm has pretty good gps built into it.
There is a site called www.gpslaptiming.com but it doesn't seem to be compatible with my phone.
g. I bought a running watch that via gps tracks everything so there has to be something.

I just installed the iLap on my HTC and did a few laps around the parking lot. It works and it was free. Pretty cool. It's pretty basic as it only does lap and split times but that's all a Hotlap timer will do too.
I'll test it out at PBIR this Saturday.

The iLap software worked great at PBIR. I made a little sheet metal holder and wire tied my phone to it. It was easy to set up.
The software for the Iphone looks pretty interesting. It looks like it will do a lot of the stuff the Traqmate does.

I use the MaxQData GPS data system. Excellent and cheap for what it offers.

Ok, help me out . . .
"Honey, can I borrow your iPhone this weekend . . . it's got a bigger screen than my Treo and . . . and . . . I want to see you clearer when we're video-conferencing"?
Is that gonna work?
I could throw in "I miss you so on track days"!
