C4 Roof Panel
Anybody know of anyone build a C4 targa roof panel with a gurney bump. Anybody know how much height you gain by gutting the roof panel of the headliner?
I have a 1990 Z51 Coupe, that I am taking to the track. I order to fit in the car with my helmet on, I have to put the seat back upright and take the roof off. I am 6'3" 263lbs. A couple of extra inches would let me run with the roof on. Might get it by changing seats but I am very happy with my optional power sport seats.
Thanks

A glass top is app. 7 lbs lighter than a fiberglass top with a headliner & it gives you a little more headroom (maybe 1")
A race seat will save some more weight, give you MUCH better support & gain a ton of headroom. How much depends on how it is mounted.
I prefer the Hardbar seat mounts & an alum. seat i.e. Ultrashield or Kirkey

I just took the seat supports out of the lower seat (the two straps). I gained about an inch, which was plenty for my 6'3" 230lb self. I do hit my helmet on the targa from time to time, but nothing major. You can see the marks on the top where it slightly rubs the top of the targa too. I did also remove my headliner and have dynomat layed over the top. I just painted it black and it works great for track use.

I removed the headliner in my '90 and painted the inside black. I also installed Corbeau FX1 Pro seats and mounted them to the floor. With the cushion in the seat I hit the top with my helmet, with the cushion out I can get my fingers in between the top and my helmet. Im 6'2" about 250lbs.

Looked in their catalog but didn't see any reference to that. My 87 only has the gold transparent roof and years of autocrossing has pretty well caused the material to show lots of fine cracking. Not to mention that the transparent top doesn't help on hot sunny days.
Melrose has "used" C4 tops but they don't say anything about pricing.

My problem is two fold, one I like my stock seats although the wife doesn't. And being 265lbs I am a wide load. So far all the race seats I have tried I don't fit.
The car is primarily for autocross with some HPDE, so street comfort is important.

I would be nervous about running high speed courses where my head was higher than the rollover support for the car. If all you do is autocross then getting an X Frame to replace the targa might work. A friend has one of these and it works well except when it is raining. If you are doing high speed your best bet is to replace the seat with one that can be hard mounted to the floor with side mounts so you can have the seat almost on the floor.
