GM adds more jobs more shifts!

General Motors Co. is expected to announce Tuesday that it is adding a third shift of production at its Lordstown plant in Ohio to produce the new compact Chevrolet Cruze, according to a source familiar with the plan.
The move, which involves recalling an unspecified number of union workers, reflects optimism by GM that customers will buy the small car in large volumes at a time when crossovers and full-size sport-utility vehicles remain popular in the U.S. marketplace.
The announcement will be made at 1 p.m. at the Lordstown facility during an event that is expected to include GM North American President Mark Reuss and Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland.

The Cruze is being touted by executives as one of the company's most critical new launches aimed at boosting fuel efficiency and meeting tougher federal regulations. The Cruze is expected to hit showrooms during the third quarter 2010 and get about 40 miles per gallon.
The move to operate Lordstown around the clock completes the plant's rebirth.
In August 2008, then-CEO Rick Wagoner and dignitaries attended a splashy event in the plant to announce a third shift and $350 million investment to build the Cruze.
A month later, the auto industry and financial markets collapsed. By January 2009, Lordstown had lost two shifts and about 2,800 workers. And last April, GM announced it was idling Lordstown for three weeks.
GM has been adding third shifts at multiple plants in recent months to solve shortages of some of its best-selling vehicles. GM's Delta Township plant near Lansing will run day and night starting in April and the Detroit automaker has said it is adding a third shift at its Fairfax plant in Kansas City, Kan., and Fort Wayne, Ind., plants, restoring 2,400 jobs.
