Default Rain Friendly Tires Stock Size for C5

Ok, I road race the C5, and use CCW with RA1 on them. Problem is that as the treads wear down, they are getting less and less wet track friendly. In order to not waste a track day in the rain (not damp but downpour), I want to bring my stock rims with a new set of tires on them all season with me to events for said emergency use.

Question:

What is a decently price, NON run flat, daily driver / track friendly WET USE tire for stock C5 size? Key being price friendly. The RA1 set up cost a big chunk on my CCW 285/335 set up. I dont want to dump big money on DD / rain tires.

Post away!

Keith, one of the guys I track with is raving about these:

There was an artical is some magazine (euro tuner I think) were these tires beat out the Z1's, Re-11's & a couple other really decent street tires in wet & dry handeling.

I have used the Firestone Firehawks with good luck in the rain :-) They work well on street as my daily driver tires then standby for rain at track events... :-)

RA1 was designed for IT class racing... as a rain tire. :-)

Wideovals work good when new. They are diabolical when old.

I'd be willing to bet you'd get similar results from any street tire.

I used my Firestone Wide Ovals in the rain. I did an HPDE at Watkins Glen in 2005 when Hurrican Katrina came through. It poured the whole day. Water depth in many places on the track could me measured in inches. The Wide Ovals permitted me to be one of the fastest cars on the track. They just cut through the water and gripped the track.

I don't know how they are on the track, but I DD a set of std C5 size Toyo T1R's and it's pretty wet here. I'm looking at the Nitto NT05's for Z06 sized DD tires for occational track use.

Zenak, so what did you end up deciding? I have read your "what you learned" post and have exactly the same question as your OP. Best reasonably priced tire for ocassional street use and brought to the track as the backup rain tire.

I had thought I had settled on the Nitto NT05s, but seems like they are not getting good reviews from Forum members in the wet. So I am currently leaning towards the Continental ExtremeContact DW based on TireRack's testing results. I have a Z so the GY GS-D3 won't work for my stock rims since 285s is as high as they go in the rear. The Contis look like they out perform the BFG KDW2 and the Firestone Wide Ovals, especially in the wet.

The current issue of Grassroots Motorsports picked that tire as their choice for running in the wet. The only tire they liked better was the race rain tire from Continental.

I like my Vredsteins. Am on the second set now. Tread design is to channel water to the outside of the car. They are quiet also.
