I want to put vinyl race numbers on my car for autocross. The number i choose last year a fellow racer had allready been useing. Im in Ca. And race with WSCC. My question is can I pick a number nobody has. how does that work. I just dont want to pick a number and not be told I cant use it. thanks

why not just put a letter behind it? use 8C instead of just 8.... if you are cool with that it will open up a lot of other options. My personal favorite was MD 20/20.

sounds like your group allows "permanent" numbers for the season. You should contact them with a few choices, and they can tell you what's available. I've never run letters in Autocross, but if that is allow, it certainly is an option. Also, a Zero in front of your old number might also be allowed (01, instead of 1)

I can cut vinyl numbers if you need a supplier. Been cutting a lot recently, and have some reusable vinyl now as well

Thanks for the reply and offer. But is a shop just down the street from me who does this. Thanks.

I use Solotime and have been very happy with the quality of their numbers / letters and wide range of options available.

Check with your local group and see what number is available that you can ask for, then after you put those on you car be sure to buy a bunch of "1"s that you can put in front of your permanent number, or behind when you travel to other clubs and have to improvise.

Good luck.

I don't know how it works in your area...but, here in SoCal you have to purchase a points card which reserves your number. The group keeps the current list on our web site and you can pick any number that isn't being used.

Also, in the group that I run with you can't use letters because letters are used to identify what class you are running in.

Here is an example...My number is 567, my class is SS, and my sub class is SK1.

Default A-x numbers

WSCC does not have a number registry since each club runs their own event. Some members run their WSCC membership number which is a unique number.
Was your number two or three digits?
If you have a favorite number order it, you can always add a 1 in front or back at the event with painters tape.

I also use iZoom. They were willing to custom match my old magnets from previous cars for no extra fee. Now I can keep the same number and look that everyone knows me by.

+1 for iZoomgraphics! Fantastic products and great prices. Friendly people too. I'll get some pictures of my car with my numbers on it this weekend at the autocross on Sunday.

If you have seperate numbers, you can get 3 different digits and assemble any particular number you want for the event that isn't already in use. For example: if you had a 2, a 3, and a 6, you could give yourself any one of the following numbers: 2, 3, 6, 9, 23, 26, 29, 32, 36, 39, 62, 63, 92, 93, 236, 239, 263, 293, 326, 329, 363, 392, 623, 632, 923, 932. The chance of all of those already being in use is very low.

I use a old used manila folder, a magic marker and blue tape to put my numbers on. I'm the envy of the autox lot!
At HPDEs I use my ink jet printer to make 8" numbers and contact paper to stick em on. they last the whole weekend.
Our local SCCA allows you to reserve a number for the season(which is a heat and grid location). say # 310 would be 3rd heat, 10th spot in the grid.)

The reusable is technically "removable" vinyl.....it uses a lower tac adhesive. If you are very careful and keep everything clean, you can remove and reuse it, although it still can stretch and deform if you aren't very careful.

I've now learned that it is best to layer other colors over the removable, as it makes it thick and stiffer (as well as giving color options). 2 layers is thick enough to be pretty manageable, but obviously each layer increases the cost.. Anyway, I have low-tac white and black vinyl.

On another note, thought I'd share this helmet decal.

I had a local graphic shop make up a pair of static cling numbers for my car. It's clear material with the number printed on the inside. When applied, only the number shows up as the car color is seen thru the clear material. I paid $40 for the pair and they came on a plastic coated sheet to hold them when they are off the car. Had them for three years now and no problems with them.

Check with the association to see if there are specific requirements like height of the numbers and class letters. 8" high numbers are typical and letters are usually 5" high. Pick a color for the numbers that will easily stand out from the body color.

I never had any luck with Static Cling for DE/high speed use, but that probably is easier to deal with for Autocross.

I use my WSCC number and add +1 for any co-driver. Also use iZoom low tac vinyl numbers. I've added a piece of electrical tape to the trailing edge of each number to make peeling off easier and less likely to tear or deform. Never liked static cling; seen too many fly off. I've had my low tac numbers for at least three years and they still look good and apply easily.
