best plug for open track

I have a dedicated track Z that's basically stock except for bolt ons and I ran NGK TR55 plugs for a couple years and have now switched to TR6 plugs. The TR6 plugs are usually recommended for head/cam cars but they seem to do a great job on a stock motor that's being tracked.
The TR55 were fine, it's just that the TR6 seems a bit better.

How do you know it needs plugs? Has performance or gas mileage dropped off? I ran my 03Z with the original plugs for the 6 years I owned it. I had a set of plugs to install in it but never got around to it. 43K total miles with 5K of them on the track. I never noticed a drop in performance and the gas mileage on the highway was the same when I sold the car as when I bought it.
