Default Painters Tape

I am going to my first HPDE at Summit Point this weekend and wonder about protecting the finish with Painters tape. Is this really important at an HPDE 1 event?

I plan to have clear body protection installed but I am now wondering if it will get torn up at HPDE events and I would be wasting my $$.

What is the best plan? Both clear body protection and tape? Tape only? or other??

Some members including myself use clear contact paper, the same kind that's used to line your cabinet shelves with. You can get it at Walmart.

I use Scotch no residue duct tape. It releases with no problem and it is thicker than painter's tape. I do recommend some sort of protection. I wish I could have taped the windshield since I took a nice chip at Road Atlanta a month ago.

I only do the mirrors and the leading edges of my lights. if you hpde you gonna mess your car up. if nothing else vulcanized rubber all over the car. Bitch to get off too.

I got the C5 creations mirror protectors i throw on in like 2 secs on the mirrors when i hit the track now because taping is a pain in the ****.

FATT or the PCA event? I'll be at the FATT so hope to see you there. I have the clear body protection and it works but ironically is even harder to get the rubber streaks off of.

Have you found any trick for easy removal?

Is it at Summit Main? Has anybody been there this year to see if they fixed it? At the end of last season it was like driving behind a gravel truck if you were behind somebody because of the track coming apart.

Why not the headlights too? If you are going to cover it... might as well save them too!

Might be dark before I get to the track. I'll cover them before I go out.

I use a little WD40 on a soft cloth to remove the rubber streaks. Quick & easy on both painted and 3M film surfaces...

I won't be out there for this one but I would love to get back there sometime soon and drive without chunks of pavement flying at my face the whole time.

Yep, been using WD40 on all the cars for many years. And Quick Detailer or Quick Wax after the WD helps even more.

The trick with tire marks is to remove them before they harden. It's much easier to remove them at the track (or in between sessions) than to wait until you get the car home and let it sit for a day or two. It's at least 3x harder to get them off after they've sat for a while.

And WD contains no silicon so, it won't interfer with a repaint.
