Do aftermarket exhausts improve performance or just make different noise?
I understand that the C5 Z06 has a pretty good exhaust from the axles back. For a car that only has headers (LG SuperPro, catless) and a tune, would there be any measurable performance benefit to going to something like a two tip Borla Stinger? If so, can you quantify the benefit?
I don't really care about noise/drone issues.
I am happy to consider other exhausts other than straight pipes.
Thanks

Hey Keith,
I'll trade you my Corsa Indys for your stock exhaust..lol
With my LG Pros and my Corsas I'm too loud to run at a couple local tracks that I'd like to try. You wont see or feel any real HP gains by just adding the catback. Just my 2 cents (3 cents Canadian)

Depends on what you have and the modifcations to the car. If all you have is a bolt on car, you may only see 8-10 hp at the rear wheels, which may not make up for the weight gained by going stainless over the factory Ti. system.
For those pushing a lot of HP with the car, then yes you will gain more HP by going to a cat back, especially a larger pipe system, even if you gain some weight.

Steve,
I missed you guys this year, hope the car is well.
My noise limit is in the vicinity of Stinger loud. I realize that the T1 guys run 3" pipes all the way back...just a little too much noise for me. I figured that the performance delta would not be that great vs stock exhaust, but wanted a second opinion or 5.
Looks like I will run the stocker till I blow the sides out, then figure out what to buy. Mods are likely to stay relatively tame so I can keep most of the reliability that the LS6 gives me, perhaps an intake and a mild cam...famous last words.
Thanks for the feedback.

In setting up a Superstock car, we found a 8 horsepower gain on a stock LS6 engine with Billy Boat Bullets with two tubes, not 4 tube and a Bassani X pipe added. This was done on the same Dyno on the same day.

for the 900-1600$ they are for noise. Ive had billy boats, stock, stock TI's, and now I run TI's with the modded pipe, but most of the time I just leave the cut outs open

I have LG pro headers and no cats. Are you saying most T1 and ST2 racers use straight pipes with that setup? I'd like to get a louder exhaust so people can hear me coming. Right now I'm really quiet compared to all the other cars out there including spec miatas .
Exactly, and I need to go faster!

My T1 car has cats, stock manifolds, but no mufflers. I think the 'loudness' is about right. On the other hand, Jody's motor is so loud, that when standing behind my car running, I can't even hear my car run when he starts his across the paddock!

Yeah, there is a point that becomes too loud. I have some LG high-flow cats I could install with straight pipes that might make it just right.

I would think that just blowing by someone without giving them a warning sound would serve you well as you're running faster than most. Plus, it won't scare them as bad.

On my 600RWHP 427 I only picked up ~10 RWHP going from the Ti exhaust to straight pipes. Honestly, the Ti is pretty damn good. My car is running 1 7/8" stepped to 2" primary tube headers and an off road X-pipe. On the straight pipes it was just stupid loud (though it was pretty awesome, with the big cam, high compression and lots timing afforded by the E85 it cackled like a Top Fueler). I went back to the Tis myself.

Really? Most people predicted much bigger changes. A lot of guys have dyno'ed roughly 10RWHP gains going to an aftermarket exhaust vs. Tis on nearly stock LS6s.
On my car we're talking about a LS7-based 427cui, ~12:1, big cam motor blowing through 1 7/8" stepped to 2" primary tube headers and an off-road X-pipe (3", but it necks down to 2.5" in the last ~6") before the catback.
The stock Ti is around 2.25" into the mufflers, where it make a 90* bend, then the exhaust has to make a 180* turn inside the mufflers, then back out into 2 even smaller-yet pipes where there is yet another 90* bend in the flow path. This vs. the straight pipes that are 3" the whole way, no muffler, no bends (obviously both the Tis and the straight pipes have to make the over bump over the axles). Keep in mind the back of the X still necked down to 2.5" for a few inches, so we weren't getting full advantage of the 3" straight-pipes.
I'll ask my builder/tuner to shoot me an overlay of the best Ti (which was around 600.3RWHP SAE corrected) and best w/ the straight pipe (which was 610ishRWHP SAE IIRC).
