Wal Mart Motor Oil
I know many of you consider even Mobil 1 a crappy product, and would only run Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple etc in your prized performance cars,, BUT I noticed a few months ago that Wal Mart Full synthetic oil is not GM4718 certified, and it is often a great bargain for my street cars.
I can usually find "oil change" deals at Autozone/Advance for name brand oil & filter for around $30, but to get a full synthetic oil change in my daily driver for around $22 using the Walmart Oil is a good deal to me.

it's in my Hyundai......I'm not testing anything.
I for one am not paying $16/qt for Royal Purple oil. Just wanted to share the info, you can make your own choices.
I've read it's made my Warren Performance, others say Quaker State. It is is very clear amber color, similar to Mobil 1.

I used to run more expensive oils but now run Mobile 1, high mileage or extended range in all my vehicles, raced or not. The most expensive of those is $28 for a 5 qt bottle and they include the zink, etc that regular Mobile 1 used to have.
I do not recall the exact info on what they have or not but this was recommended to me a few years ago but somebody that does know what they are talking about.
I seldom buy anything at WM as not to keen on some of their business practices but I can look the other way once in awhile.
Maybe for my beater truck I will switch to their brand of synth, I have seen it but never bought it.

I had a buddy that was well versed in oil statistics and ran the walmart brand syn in his subaru. Had a couple blackstone tests and it got great results. Subaru motors are pretty harsh oil since the pistons are fighting gravity not to scrape the cylinder wall.
Not saying it will work well in anything else just wanted to give some insight.

Guys I don't know about you, but I regularly buy Mobile 1 for Vette and pay no more that $22 for the 5 quart big bottle. My mechanic charges me $10 for the filter and labor, no problem. I am pretty sure the Wal Mart full synthetic is fine, but why skimp. I have 271K miles on my Hyundai Elantra, and 185K miles on my VW Cabriolet, 125K miles on the Vette, and 56K miles on the Hyunadi Santa Fe. My other two cars have less that 12K.
$22 bucks every 7500 miles on the out of warranty cars and every 3000 on the in warranty cars isn't too much to spend for not having motor problems. The vette gets changed about 1 a year as it mainly raced and weekend driven to about 5k miles per year.

...thought about it anyway. In an oil consuming engine (I have a few in the fleet - 87 Mustang LX leaps to mind) I run the cheapest oil I can find plus Marvel Mystery oil.
I normally buy my Mobil 1 from WalMart in the 5 qt jugs. Sometimes they even have 15-50 on the shelf

Doesn't the certification process for the GM 4718M standard cost a lot of money to to go thru? I had thought I had heard that at one point when oil companies decided to not get the certification because of the high cost for the testing procedure that GM requires.
Quaker State Full Synthetic used to carry the GM certification but Pennzoil does not. AMSOIL doesn't show it either.
I use Mobil-1 and I get the Wally World 5-quart jugs. But they usually run $27 a bottle around here. Costco's 6-pack of Mobil-1 quarts is $39 but they occasionally have coupons for $9 off. W-W will have sales on occasion where the Mobil-1 jug is down to $19 or $22. That's when I stock up. I get both the W-W jugs and the quart bottles as I need 6 quarts for an oil change for each of my rigs.

I love oil discussions! This one has to be one of the most civil I've seen in some time; maybe we should move it over to C5 General.
Seriously, though, I used to buy M1 at WM. Switched to Quaker State a few years ago when they came out with the 5 qt. jugs and became cost competitive with M1.
The WM synthetic oil is only $2 less than the QS, which leads me to believe QS is who's packaging the oil for WM. I'm staying with QS, primarily because I have oil analysis history with that oil and the price is so close.
Frankly, I think *any* full synthetic oil will work fine in our engines, and that's what I recommend to my friends.
Have a good one,
Mike

nearly 25% savings for the Wal Mart oil is worth it to me....not for race cars necessarily, but for my street car. I can do a synthetic service for the same price, maybe less, than a name brand conventional.

I run the oil I drain from my good cars in the beaters....

I do have to say I don't always run synthetic in my Santa Fe becasue the warranty requires a oil change every 3500. Frequently that car gets the standard shop oil which is Chevron because an oil change with filter is $19.95. Yes I am lazy I pay someone these days to do the oil changes. I know my mechanic, he does most the work on my cars and is fairly priced.
The key for me on the syn's is that I buy the big 5qt bottle, not the individual bottles. Bulk saves.
