Default Yellow stripe on steering wheel - Really?

Do any of you find it useful? Seems like a waste of pigment to me.
Educate me please.

I think it's a worthwhile additions to the vehicles I've seen it on, which are typically high performance racing vehicles. And by that I mean 1992 Honda Civics with cut springs, unpainted body parts and holes in the muffler.

If you get a Viper ACR the stripe on the car lines up with the stripe on the wheel

It's not as good as white, but yellow will do. Myself, I prefer puce.

I have a strip of tape on the top of my wheel to help me quickly and accurately orient the wheel when I reinstall it.

The purpose of the steering wheel stripe is to assure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead for ease of making tire changes during pit stops. While it can assist in positioning the steering wheel, IMHO it's a poser move on any car not racing in situations where wheels are customarily changed during races.

In round track racing I used it to help determine how much the front alignment was changed after contact. The drive from the pits to the starting line up was used to tell how far off the wheel was put on. We always had a moment to pull it back off and get another chance to align the steering wheel.

When I dirt raced you did that so when you put the wheel back on its on the correct way that lines up with the wheels and the way you want it. It's also fun to watch go from left to right and back again when driving

I thought it was used so that you knew what position the tires were in at a glance as you were frantically spinning the steering wheel trying to save a spin or off course adventure.

If you use an in car driver cam mixed with your front/rear view cams, it helps greatly when studying your videos. The more the stripe is vertical (less correction inputs), the faster you'll be going ...of course that assumes the stripe is on top of the wheel

That's the main argument I've heard, but I can't imagine having to look at the steering wheel (even subconsciously) to try to correct a spin.
Reason I ask is that the wheel I'm looking at buying has one and I don't really like it or want it.

My thoughts too. You should just know how much to turn the wheel regardless of position based on how the car is yawing. Its a feel thing not a visual thing.

My old Ferrari F355 challenge wheel has a red center, it's sorta "there" but you don't really notice it.

I'm with Jody, only useful for installing a removable wheel correctly.

It helps me with after the fact data analysis and as a check on after-incident wheel alignment. It's also good in the aforementioned tire change scenario. Depending on your quick change setup, it's good to know whether the wheel is aligned correctly when you snap it on. It's useful to me for those reasons.
