Default Info from the C5's at Road Atlanta...

NASA event this past weekend would be helpful.

I'm very sensitive to the coolant temps, particularly after adding the splitter, that these cars generate during a 30 minute race when the temps are in the 90's. After my oil temps get to 150*, I then shift my DIC to the digital coolant temp.

Did anyone notice their car's coolant temps during the racing/sessions this past weekend?

It'd be interesting to create some reference marks for everyone to use.

If I run really hard mine gets to about 225. If I am able to back off a bit it will drop quickly to just under 220.

BTW, what was that Jodyism I heard you use- split up more than a quart of wood, what was it?

239 water, 279 trans racing Tim.
Backed off after he got by, water cooled to 234.
Saw you and Mike coming, dropped the hammer.
Trans temp HOT, quit looking, started praying for the white flag.

You must be talking about that story I was telling about a race I was in where I'd get up side by side with a guy and I'd be in the inside for the turn. He'd stay on the outside of me and chop down across my left front fender at the apex & track-out knowing I needed just a bit of room for track-out. He did it turn after turn knowing I'd be forced to come off the throttle to avoid wrecking us. Oh, and he wasn't even in my class.

I said I got chopped more than a chord of wood that day.

I figured it was better not to push him out since I wanted to continue race on subsequent weekends.

The highest I saw my coolant was 238* which was fine with me. In fact, I was pleased with that considering the ambient temp.

I have no idea what my transmission temp was, I don't have a gauge for that. I know the warning comes on at 270* but since I've never seen that I assume it never reaches that. Do you have a xmission cooler?

I don't know. I've seen 240+* hot days like this past weekend before I got the radiator cleaned out, the shroud tightened up, and new ducting installed.

Other people have told me 240+ wasn't uncommon.

That's why I'm asking people what temps they saw so we all have some sort of marker.

I snatched my cooling fans for the weekend and to be honest was very nervous about it, but Mark was right. The car ran cooler in the race without them. Max water I remember was I think 224* and I was running pretty hard most of the time. Oil never got above 250* with my home brewed stand alone front mounted cooler.

I was not close to any of yall's lap times So probably can't make a fair comparison. Water around 200 (160 stat) oil 225- Ron Davis with built in oil cooler. I installed trans and diff coolers from DRM right before this event, but I do not have a trans temp gauge to give data on that.

Yours should do well just from the reduced revs compared to an ls6. If you are spinning the snot out of it (like Jason) the stock rad is probably marginal. Also engine tune (af and thus egts) will make a big difference I have noticed. Closer to stock is good here

TTA C5Z with a Dewitt's radiator and Setrab 625 EOC. Highest coolant temp was 223, oil was 252. With the stock setup I was running 240+ coolant, 285+ oil.

If I'd have left my fans out I'd have cooked down getting onto grid a couple of times last weekend. Doubt I'll keep the stock fans, but I'll have something in there.

Don't think I saw my water temp over 225 and my oil on Sunday was around 270 (I was pushing hard and shifting close to 7k rpms trying to catch Rob and Tim).

I pulled my factory fans and shroud. I mounted a 16" Spal fan for sitting on grid and after the race. Rarely see temps above 205.
Side note: 20 - 30 degrees ambient shouldn't make much difference in coolant or oil temps, if it does then something else is wrong.

This is a little bit of a hi jack but I was running max oil temp of 273 with a Ron Davis Radiator with built in EOC. I used to get up to 300 without any oil cooler. Didn't check my water temps out too much so can't report. I think I was running 1:43 ish with the Nitto tires on.

I run the Mobil 1 5w30. I have read most all of the other oil treads and I know there is varing opionion regards oils and weights but just wondering what weights most LS engine guys use here. Thanks.

I thought that too... I wonder if it made a difference that I didn't change oil in the car from the last CMP event in May? I'm changing it out this week. Plus, I also let the car run the entire time in grid because the battery was getting weak after I left my transmission cooler on in the paddock after Sunday qualifying Last year when it was so hot at VIR and RA, the max I ever saw was 255 for oil but that was with fresh Amsoil 10w30. Now I'm running Amsoil 15w50.
