Default Ceramic coated Ti rotors ?

Interesting thread in the ZR1 section about replacing ZR1 rotors with iron rotors, and then the subject of ceramic coated Ti rotors came up (which I had never heard of). Apparently at least one race car out there uses them quite successfully and has for some time. Any of you guys know anything about these? Theoretically they sound quite interesting (great heat capacity and UltraLite..... vague vendor reference )

Ti is a very poor heat conductor and does not work well for brake rotors.

Ceramic coated ?

Yeah, when I first read the thread I thought they were some gimmick. Then when the fellow posted about his race car, and when I read their catalog I began wondering if they were for real - sounds like some race series may use them? Not sure.

The ceramic coating will actually resist thermal penetration. Sounds like the idea here is to not let the rotor get hot to begin with. These would behave similar to the shuttle hest resistant tiles. I guess all the heat is scrubbed off by the cooling ducts. In the shuttles case it's the velosity of the craft.

does not the friction of the brake pad against the rotor slow the car down and the energy is converted to heat ?

Something has to give here...
Brakes turn kinetic into thermal and materially chews the rotor. Soo if you have the same amount of heat to dispel and your dumping it into a ceramic; your pads are gonna be the bad boys getting *way* hot. Then the fluid, then the caliper. And Ti distorts at a different rate than a ceramic, so I'd be concerned about rapid breakdown of the coating.

Nothing is free. I just think it would have very specific applications where heat isn't that great a concern.

We ran a set of Ti rotors on an MT900 once, back in 2004 maybe? They had lots of holes, and slots, with no internal vanes, much like a motorcycle rotor. Reduced unsprung weight by a lot, and increased stopping distance....they didn't stay on the car long. They would have been an $18,000 option, had they worked. I think that company has disappeared since then too.
