Default 2 deaths at Silver State Classic in Nevada

It was a Camaro, not a Vette, but I imagine some of us might have been there?

Very sad, my condolences to their families and friends.

My condolences to the families.

The course does have some rough bumps on it for the speeds being driven, but a blown tire can happen anywhere.

The tire blew out at over 200 mph.
Informative slide presentation on 200+mph tires:

Continental actually makes a tire with a 220mph speed rating, the VMAX:

Tires have been a problem since the beginning of this race. Street tires are incapable of (safely) maintaining 200+mph speeds, and "race tires" (slicks are not permitted) pick up debris and are cut down, with catastrophic results.
BTW Michelin makes tires capable of 254mph for the Bugatti Veyron, BUT (supposedly) they are $25,000/set, and the car must be returned to France for proper tire mounting

Wow, that sucks. I have done 3 races and each time there are tire issues. Wonder which ones they were using. I have been going with the pilot sport 2s. From what I noticed a lot of the 200 guys use them. My condolences to their friends and families.

Tragic.

Having completed the SSCC many times as a driver and navigator, and having run in excess of 200 MPH on that road, it's true that anything can happen.

I knew Merle, the navigator. He was a great guy, and had been around the event for as long as I can remember. Both he and the driver will be missed by the ORR community.

Very sad, what type of tires did you run at those speeds?

Even with all our safety gear and a well prepped car there are risks. Condolences to the family.

You pays your money, and you takes your chances. I'm a big Reno Air Races fan. I hope they don't change a thing. The races must go on!

It's certainly been a tragic past few days for speed events in NV.
