Questions of Installing Race Seat & Wheel in C5
I've got an OMP Grip seat I'll be installing in my '99 FRC, and I'd like to get a quick-release steering wheel at/around the same time. The car is in the process of being transformed from DD/Solo1 into a dedicated road-race car.
I'll be mounting the seat without any adjustments, as I'll be the only one driving the car. I'm 6'1" and wondering what style of wheel and/or extentions folks would recommend?
Can I mount a flat wheel with a quick-release and no extension, or will I necessarily need an extendor (or a dished wheel)? What diameter wheel maintains gauge cluster visibiltiy (I see a lot of 330 mm wheels on-line)? Any specific make/model recommendations (I've been looking at this one)?

The parts above (with 2" spacer) puts the wheel about 1/2" closer than the stock position. It's perfect for me.

This is what I used...
No extension needed on steering wheel
Hub adapter
http://ltbautosports.com/chco69.html
Quick release
http://ltbautosports.com/ltbquicrelsp.html
Steering wheel 350mm can see gauges fine
http://ltbautosports.com/momomod88.html
a little closer to the driver by maybe an inch, not circle track close, but I like the steering wheel position better than the stock position

I just got a 350mm Momo Mod 78 wheel and their QR2 weld on quick release adapter from LTB for my C4 track car... As others have said, no play in the quick release. Nothing else needed besides the wheel and the QR2.

Thanks for all the input, guys!
I'm going to get the seat mounted and then see how much extension I'll need on the new wheel to get it in the right spot. I'll scope out those links and see what fits the bill.

As for seat mounting... there's nothing better than Gary's setup from Hardbar

Hey that Hardbar mount looks awesome - I'm meeting a fabricator tonight to discuss extending the roll bar into a full cage, and he's also on our club's Tech crew - I'll show him this and get his take on that passing tech. Should be no problem (I'm assuming it's SCCA legal, and the SCCBC generally uses that as a guideline).

To be clear the kit comes with stud adapters to install over the OEM carpet. I'm tall so I went the extra measure and trimmed the stock floor pan (it's got a balsa wood core) to lower the seat as much as possible; most do not do this. It allowed me to ditch the stud adapters and just use the OEM seat studs. I gained 5/8" of head room.

I'll be working on getting the seat in next Monday, and then will have a pretty good idea what I'll need for adapters & such. Looking forward to getting this all together!
Question about the air-bag delete: anyone know what size/power rating resistor I need to use to keep the SRS lamp off?

OK, so we got down to the business of installing the seat last night...
Following the tip to carve out the top layer of composite & balsa to get the seat as low as possible, here's the first track cut:
1/4" plate cut to fit & drilled for the stock seat-studs. Seat bracket positions marked after a test-fit:
Holes drilled & tapped on the rails, bolts tightened & welded on the top side:
Heads ground off & bolt welded on the bottom:
Rails assembled on the bench to the side-mounts & seat in order to square them up:
Completed rails with studs mounted & installed with eye-bolts for the harness attachments:
As it's still my DD, the carpet goes back over the rails & is cut for the new studs and the harness is attached:
Lap & anti-submarine belts attached to eyes. Need to confirm with the club if this is sufficient for Tech, but it gets me rolling for now:
And the finished product - seat mounted to the new rails & harness in place:
It turned out really well - very clean and solid. Made for an interesting drive home - I hadn't realized how much the seat was absorbing the bumps...
Next I'll scope out the race-wheel options in detail & make my selection. As I ended up at least 1" lower, and perhaps a little further from the dash, I'll likely be going with an extender along with the quick release. That will be cool to get set-up!

Did you remove the factory seat studs and replace them with the eye bolts?
