Toyota Motorsport GmbH will field a hybrid racer in the Le Mans 24 Hours and other 2012 FIA World Endurance Championship races.

Toyota's contender will be based on a prototype chassis designed by Toyota Motorsport in Cologne, Germany, and a hybrid powertrain produced by Toyota Motor Corp. in Japan, the automaker said Friday.

"Toyota Motor Corp. has entered Le Mans before but by using our hybrid technology this time will be a completely new challenge," said Tadashi Yamashina, senior managing officer at Toyota and chairman of Toyota Motorsport. "We want to write a new page in the history of the Le Mans 24 Hours, as well as in the FIA World Endurance Championship, through our use of hybrid technology."

I am a little puzzled as to how a hybrid drive train would add performance in this race. Maybe a KERS regenerative system like some of the cars in F1 use? The weight penalty would seem to cancel out any performance gains. Any ideas ??

Most stops are dictated by needing fuel... use less fuel, make fewer stops...

Yeah, but seemingly a terrible track (ultra fast, flowing).
That being said the "hybrid" 911 kicked butt at the Ring.

Excited to see Toyota back in it, I love those GT-Ones.
I don't think they are in this to get their clock cleaned by the Lions and the Rings.

Default It's not just Toyota...

Peugeot...

So you know that Audi and Porsche (2014 is their goal for LMP1 entrance) won't be far behind. It's going to get interesting.
