Default Oli's Crazy "Flying Hood" Incident

Nothing more needs to be said than what is in the two-minutes of in-car video.

Well actually, Bill's thread as external video from his car chasing mine when it happened. Go to this TrackHQ thread to see that video:
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/auto...ener-vids.html

Here is the in-car video of the flying hood.

So you decided to throw your hood at him?

It is a stock C5 Z06 carbon fiber hood from the 2004 LeMans edition cars.

Are there any minor changes that you can do to prevent pressure build up in the engine compartment?

Minor would include taping up the gaps, would not be louvers.

I run the same hood at the same speeds & I'm thinking, since this was a "test" CF hood on the 2004's and they were testing paint, that just maybe, GM did not test this option up to track speeds.

Just sayin.

One member has already posted to tape up the "metal mesh" air intakes & make sure the rubber seal is secure at the windshield bottom. Anything else?

Technically those mods are not legal in T1. I think my hood was just old and tired. It has many years of racing history. This time last year I got hit real hard after my engine blew at Phoenix. The corner of the car was hit and the hood frame may have had a slight crack or separation in the epoxy. On top of that other track skirmishes don't have all my fenders and lights fitting all so well. I am sure that caused a lot of additional aero pressures on the hood. At the higher speeds we run at ACS she just gave way.

I am adding a hood frame inspection to my race preparation list. I don't expect this problem to happen again. I am not aware of it happening to anyone else either. I will monitor the integrity of my hood from now on just like I inspect the spokes of all my wheels when they get mounted on the car as well as the rotors for cracks, etc.

That was my anti-drafting smoke screen. Works quite well.

Had you notice hood lifting more than in previous track days? Looks like it was lifting at beginning same as right before it blew. Curious if it was a gradual thing. Took a look at my Daytona vid at 175+ but can't see my hood like your.

I dont know about its legality in T1 and Im sure it cost points in other racing sanctions but wouldnt louvers help vent the under hood pressure? Just asking because Ive been looking at aftermarket hoods.

Yes... louvers do vent underhood pressure. However, with the radiator in the factory laid back position the air should funnel down and out under the car.
