looking to purchase driving simulator
what racing driving simulator can you buy that is as close to real driving as possible but reasonable priced?? Virtual GT is way too expensive.. any others? are the game versions close enough to really driving and shifting comparing to real life and are they worth purchasing? (Xbox 360, GT5 etc.. thoughts and opinions please and anyone that has tried them chime in

get a logitech g27 racing wheel. build a frame for it and you have one heck of a simulator. there are a lot of good games out there with great physics engines.

Forza 4 has an excellent physics engine and paired with a good wheel/shifter mounted with a racing seat (you can built a custom mount) it is a great simulator. Nothing will really beat actual seat time but this is probably as close as you can get for a fairly cheap price.

I know there is nothing like the real thing, thats why i go once a month at least.. but im looking for something that would take its place now and then.. any companies? I remember talking to someone who was selling simulators at the track one day, but i missplaced his info... they were offering ones from 3500 and up

A friend who has an amusement park told me to go on e-bay. He said that some of his buddies have NASCAR bodies with some kind of amusement arcade simulator in them...and they were trying to get rid of them.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NASCAR-Race-...item3a5138446a This is a new one. These guys build computer based simulators in FL so may provide you with some info on a build without a NASCAR body (unless you want one).
I don't know how the amusement park cast-offs would connect to iRacing.com or run games like Forza or GT5 or who would provide support for the simulator or where you would put this thing?

Best pedals that I could find..

Shifter...can't remember as some are sequential, some are H pattern, etc.
Here is an old review with detailed specs on a complete simulator including monitors....
http://gizmodo.com/390698/motion+pro...divorce-papers Price starts at about $50K for this rig.
Pod - $x depending on what you want....hydraulic actuation to give to more realistic ride or just a fixed ride.
Computer - $X or depending on what you want.
Monitors - $X

The conclusion I came to because I didn't have enough knowledge about what I was buying or how much I would use it......was to buy a PS3 with a Logitech G27 wheel with GT5.....about $400 total. Used a table and office chair for now. If I get the plans that I referred you to in a previous post on this thread, I'll look at building that. I'm glad I didn't go wild on this as I have used the system about 3 times in four months. No time for it.
I don't know much about buying a simulator for $20K $30K. I have wondered what kind of experience that gives me vs a cheap set up like I have. Do they come with an ECCI wheel or some wheel that is a non-forcefeedback wheel, etc.
Where are you going to set-up your rig? In a bonus room....away from traffic and able to be easily moved put away in someplace? I guess the NASCAR bodies simulator couldn't get into my bonus room
Get a demo of what you are going to buy from someone who already has one. That's how I decided that the G27/PS3 combo was more than enough for me to get a handle on what sim racing is about.

we have a Corvetteforum race leauge already going in OT (has been ongoing for 3-4 years). The physics in Forza 4 are good.. especially when combined with a Fanatec FF wheel and force feedback clubsport pedals. combined with a playseat rig (seat, peadal and wheel frame) it makes for some pretty good sim racing.. costs:
xbox 360 w/forza 4:+/- $400
Xbox Live gold 1yr sups: +/- $69.00
Playseat: +/- $400
Fanatec Wheel w/clubsport pedals: +/- $700
Flatscreen TV: +/- $1000
all those numbers are rough estimates because taste and deals can vary widely.. but those should give a pretty good idea...
so.. maybe $2600
hope to race with ya soon!

I'm using iRacing I have my Corvette seat on a basic wood frame until I get a whole rig built. I suggest going with a good set of pedals right away. My Fanatec pedals are sooo much better than my original G27 pedals I can't even put it in words.
With your budget you may want to consider an entry level motion rig and get yourself a greater immersion factor.
