Default Is this oil cooler location a dumb idea

Had to try this and see if it would fit. It does. Canton cooler.

Have arranged the blower motor to draw cabin air into the plenum and across the cooler, exhausting into bay.

Cute, but is it smart?

That is a creative idea but I dont think it will be very efficient. I dont think the air velocity will be as high as if it were in front of the car, and the box around it will help retain heat. Also, I am not a fan of running oil line inside, or near the cabin. In case of a leak, or roll over I would hate to have all that inside the car.

Bad idea

1.) If you have a fire in the engine compartment you don't have a firewall since the plastic won't be there very long. Not sure any sanctioning body would allow it.

2.) The fan has to work really hard, the velocity around the windows is the pretty close to the highest as anywhere on the car, and consequently, the pressure in the cabin is low and that means the air wants to flow the other way (from low on the sides and out the window). Your fan will have to work like crazy just to keep the air from going the wrong way.

3.) A small blower can't suppy much airflow. It's ok for a tranny or diff cooler, but you need a lot more airflow for an engine oil cooler.

Thanks gentlemen.

Good points.

The idea was fun, but we have been second guessing since we did it.

Seen it on circle track cars, but with much larger cooler and 12An lines.

I am worried about a siphon affect as well.

The run from the filter to the bottom of the cooler is too short as well. Hard to get tools to it.

No other opinions? Ok, the two I received will do just fine.

Solo... we put aluminum sheet on the normal entry, never thought about the opening into the fan, but your right... it would be open there.

That fan moves a load of air, three speeds. But we are going to move the thing up front when the Front air dam piece comes in.

Two HPDE session and the car is traveling at speeds that make it feel a little squirrelly.

Amazing to me, I expected a real stodgy, sedate start to this sport????

I actually like it. As long as the hole in the firewall is blocked off (where the cabin air would normally blow), I see no problems with it.

It's well protected from track debris. +1
The fan speed is adjustable. +1
Very creative +++1
looks like an early C4 with L98.

On a cold track day, don't run the fan +1

I really see nothing wrong with it.

and if I am correct, it's sucking air from the cabin, which is cooler than the engine compartment or track surface.

looks like someone posted something, then removed it. In response to that, it's sucking air from the cabin, or cowl, depending on how it's set up.

I would run it, and run it hard, and record oil temps.

Air is from the cabin, but it was brought up that this is low pressure area.

But is pretty easy to make that from the cowl?

My worry is the column of oil standing there wanting to go to the pan on every stop??

Why is it low pressure ? the windows are open, and air is rushing in, especially on turns.

Doesn't matter, there is a fan there moving air. high pressure or low pressure, the air is being forced acrossed the cooler.

Even if the cabin pressure is lower on straights, it will still pull air from the cabin, and blow it across the cooler.
