Default Brake fluid for towing

This may be a bit off topic, but if you tow your race car, I could use your opinion.

I know many of you tow. I have a Chev van I use and it's time to change the brake fluid (uh, like 3 years ago).

I thought there was a thread on here about it but I can't find it.

What fluid do you like for your tow vehicles? Best place to buy?

Thanks

A good quality DOT3 fluid will work fine. You really aren't going to subject a DOT3 fluid to the high brake temps that track use sees. But it certainly doesn't hurt to do a fluid flush each year if you are towing any appreciable amount.

As mentioned Castrol LMA is a very good fluid. Another one is the Ford Motorsports HD fluid (yes, F***) Valvoline is another good fluid.

The Ford fluid is typically available from a Ford dealer; the parts counter should have it. It comes in small 8 oz bottles so you can buy enough for what you need and won't have fluid left over in a quart jug.

The Castrol and Valvoline fluid should be available at most chain parts stores.

I agree that a brake flush every year is a good idea on the tow vehicle. I use a Motive Bleeder and use Amsoil DOT4 - the same stuff I put in the race car. I don't mind spending the extra dollar or two for the DOT4 fluid and I feel better having a higher temp fluid that I know I can depend on in the tow vehicle. BTW, it's a 2002 Yukon.

Change it every two years.

I admit I was lazy and had the dealer do it when the Tahoe was in for an oil change.

Truck has close to 50K miles
