Default Turn One and cooler but power steering fluid still boiling!

Hi all,

I killed my stock power steering pump and the track (on a C5 not Z).
So I changed it for an upgraded Turn One and added a Z51 cooler.

Still, on my last two track days I had fluid projections under my hood. It seems the fluid is still boiling and it is not good as it goes upon the belt.

It is true I do long runs an very twisty little tracks. I don't feel any trouble in the steering.

Any ideas how to solve this? I think my Mech put standard fluid. Maybe should he change the formula? If you have a good formula I would npve interested. More than a "trademark" as we don't have the same here I'm France.

Thanks.

If you can get it - use Redline power steering fluid or something similar.
You may also want to wrap a paper towel/wristband around the cap and zip tie it to prevent fluid from spilling.

I've heard of some people not putting as much fluid in. Like having the cold fluid level so it just reaches to bottom of the dipstick. I'm not sure why, but I've never had any particular trouble after switching to a Turn One pump on my C5Z. And I run 315's on the front of my car.

I run 315s on my c5z ('03) and I've never had this problem. Specific to certain years, models?

It could be spilling out. Lower the level a little & seal the cap better. I put a double rubber o-ring and mine seals very well now. Did not like the rag idea.

I run Amsoil synthetic fluid and a medium size transmission cooler with a stock pump and rack. I also have a smaller crank pulley so I'm not spinning it as fast. The rpm's are what boil the fluid.
Turn One also makes a restrictor to limit the flow. Look on their website under accessories.

Most likely it is puking out the cap. Like others have said, just fill to the bottom cold level and wrap the cap.

As others have said, good fluid, don't fill to the top, use a rag with a zip tie to catch overflow if necessary and use a good quality underdrive pulley such as the ATI. Your driving style could have something to do with it, also. Are you 'sawing' the wheel too much? In other words, do you constantly move the wheel back and forth playing with the slip angle of the front tires?

with dropping the fluid level slightly. I use Redline synthetic PS fluid in my 87 and keep the fluid level just at the bottom of the little dipstick on the cap. You can get Redline at a variety of vendors Sumit Racing, JEG's and some of the CF supporting vendors will have it too.

If you go to a fluid like Redline, make sure you flush all of the old fluid out. May want to buy an extra quart of fluid to do that part, then refill.

I had the same problem and used a larger cooler to cure the problem.

No I don't do this. I am more a calm and accurate driver than "all over the place" ! But I do very twisty tracks.

I'll try this. I did not even think it could be this I directly thought about boiling. Thanks.

I'm using this with a standard C5 Z06 pump/cooler and I've never had a problem over many racing years:

disconnect return hose from rack to reservoir . Attach a 3 foot extension hose and put end in a bucket. have a gallon of hydrolic power steering fluid handy. start car, have driver turn wheel. add fluid as it comes out. when done, re attach original hose to reservoir and add 50/50 mix of Lucas power steering oil and redline power steering oil. ie. same thing as "Gibbs Racing" power steering fluid

I have seen this fix 4 leaking power steering racks and no more boiling

If power steering makes any noise you have bubbles in it. jack up front of car. insert key to unlock steering lock, do not start car, turn steering wheel back and forth end to end 20 times. bubbles should be gone now.

write this down. all good mechanics know this

Your welcome

That doesn't make sense, I have driven C5's for years with stock pumps and fluid from autozone and never had a problem. There is something else wrong.

I had no problem on roads. It is when I started tracking the car a bit seriously. Anyways, what else could it be?

Out here in Arizona and California deserts, we all boil power steering fluid on the track

unless you prepare for it

as the sayings go ie.......prepped race car

I'm talking about driving on track with 315 hoosiers on front. Tracks like Roebling with long sweepers in 95 degree weather.

I boiled it in my camaro, put in a turn one and that solved the problem.

Never did it in the vette-VIR, Sebring, Road Atlanta, Barber, etc..

Yeah, but you boiled everything in that camaro. Such an abused car.
