Default Bosco's 2013 Project: Howe Mustang

With our Corvette pretty well sorted out, and my late model type GTA (Smokey Yunick look) stock car almost done, I needed something else to waste my money on. Soooooo.............I bought one of the new Howe Mustang bodies and we will build a custom TA2 type chassis for it.

Since I have a Lingenfelter ASA LS1 sitting in the shop, were gonna use that. Under the SCCA GTA rules you can use the LS1 with other body styles.

I will be completely stripping an ex Mike Waltrip Racing ASA car I have for parts. The tranny, brakes, quickchange rear end, fuel cell, shocks, trailing arms, spindles, pedals, guages, radiator etc all can be transferred over to the Mustang. Everything will get checked and freshened as needed.

I was gonna do a Camaro, but just thought the Mustang looked so good.

The chassis will use the Howe Trans Am 2 front clip, the rest will be a square tube design by Woody @ Bemco Fab similar to my Grand Am spec Corvette.

The Chassis will be very similar to our Bemco Corvette

Got the Howe Mustang body in last week. It had been sitting up there for a while, finally found someone to transport it for a reasonable sum.

I sold off most of the parts from an ASA car I had, but kept the Lingenfelter LS1, the quickchange rear, some suspension, rack etc for the Mustang. I took the motor to Byron Koury Racing Engines in Deland Fl to get freshened. Byron disassemble it and said it was in good shape, and looked like a low hour motor. I am converting it to carburetion and we will test the Edelbrock Performer RPM and Victor Jr Manifolds. I have heard that the RPM makes a little less HP but 30-40 more pounds ft of torque, if so I will take the torque.

Considered building a Ford small block but since I have a perfectly good LS1 and the car will be legal for SCCA GTA and V8 StockCar with the LS, we will go that way.

I have some Wilwood SL6's for it, but will look for some Nascar Brembo's instead. Probably Penske single adjustable shocks, cause we find them cheap used and rebuild them.

Why not keep the EFI and go w/a carb manifold (sounds like you can fit it, and they are the best intakes)?

We have run the Holley HP 80541 650 cfm carb in the past for the GTA class and it works very well and makes good power. It is simple, and in past tests made about 20 more HP than the LS6/ stock throttle body. The EFI did make about 10 more pounds of torque than the carb with Victor Jr. Hoping the Performer RPM manifold will improve on that.

Having run both intakes (on a ford motor) I can tell you the victor will make A LOT more hp (in my case it was about 40rwhp peak) and allow much more rpm before falling off. Very little difference in torque. On track the victor is much faster. Unless rules require it, I wouldn't even consdider the performer.

Howe has said that there will be coming, but I am guessing not until next year.

I hear ya, but in several tests on LS applications, the HP was close and the torque decidely in favor of the RPM. We shall see, cuz I am gonna test both.

We don't run much over 6500 in our road race cars. If we were gonna twist in excess of 7000 I am sure the Vic Jr would be the better choice. It still may be.

For recycled NASCAR brakes give the guys at 2nd Chance in Moorsville a call. I stopped by there last summer and dreamed up all kinds of things I could try to apply to my C3 from there, including huge brakes which still fit in 15" wheels (but not likely to fit my old 200S Americans). Fuel cell is next on the list.

I hope to see you at Roebling in a couple of weeks.
