Hoosier Wets in the Dry
My order for a set of NT01s in 315/35/17 just got cancelled due to national backorder.
Tirerack currently has a great deal on Hoosier wets in this size. I've done some digging online but can't get a definitive answer on what these tires would behave like in the dry. I would only be using these for HPDEs so being competitive isn't really an issue.
Can anyone shine some light on it? Thanks!

I ran an old set last year and they did alright. I also had them on for a drag racing night, pulled down a 1.76 sixty foot with them. Tire Rack offers tire shaving service, I wonder if that would work well.

Don't use the wets in dry conditions. They will wear out fast. Most rain tires are designed for only one-time use for best performance.
Your money would be better spent on some Khumos or Michelins. Your runflats would be better in the long run than rain tires.

Thx for the advice. I may end up going with NT05s for now. I only have limited HPDE experience and it seems like the NT05s will perform quite well and I won't even have to stress about driving to the track on these tires(as opposed to the NT01s I originally ordered).
Gonna be running: 275/40/17 & 315/35/17

I'm going to run them again. Four 315's were $600 shipped! I'll make a thread on how they do this time.

I really thought about having them shaved but my first track event will be in spring, it's likely to be rainy and cold. I'll drive around on them from there and do another event in summer. Then take some pix of how the tread does. I didn't have any trouble last summer. They smoked good on the dyno too.

It sounds like you made a good choice about not buying the Hoosier wets. Just in case other read this thread, the wet tire is a completely different build. Construction, compound, tread area, etc are all different. Using the wet in the dry would be very damaging to the tire, not to mention destroying the tread. If you have to use them (say its raining in the beginning of the race and dry by the end) I would not use them anymore after having dry time on them.

Obviously I don't agree since I just bought some! lol
BTW You can order directly from Hoosier and they have a flat $15 shipping fee which makes them less expensive than Tire Rack. They are under the discontinued tires link on their site.
I did not have any very damaging experiences when I ran them for street, drag, and HPDE/TT use. Hoosier has stated in the past that racing on a full tread wet could peel the tire in the dry. Shaving the tire or using a worn tire would help with this. They are also great street tires! I wouldn't run them in the dry for a long W2W race that's for sure. I will take some pictures of how they do this time around.

I have a set of the Hoosier wets that I have had for a couple of years, but only put them on for actual wet track use. They come off as soon as track starts to dry. When the rain stops during a race you want to cry because you know you are taking a lot of like away. They are by far the best tires for rain.
I agree with the choice for street and HPDE use to stay with a more standard tire. Your wallet will thank you!

Well my kid likes them anyways!
I was looking through the NASA TT rules for something else and noticed the Hoosier wet is in the most points category aside from non-dot slicks. Why is it docked so many points? More points than an A6! Here's the section:
The following DOT-approved R-compound tires: BFG R1S, Hoosier Wet DOT (if used in dry conditions—see section 6.7) + 15
2 ) The following DOT-approved R-compound tires: BFG R1, Goodyear Eagle RS AC (auto-cross), Hankook Z214 (C90 & C91 compounds only), Hoosier A6 +13

If you are going TT3 you don't play by points anymore. If you are trying to go back to TTB than you would be faster on an A6 anyway. The wet has a really soft compound but cannot create as much lateral grip in the dry as an A6 due to construction and tread differences.

Since NASA and NARRA have no WI events this year I may not do any road course competition. I ran around on Hoosier wets all last year for mixed street, track, and drag use. Then switched to some R6 scrubs and had the same lap times. The wets actually did a better sixty foot at the drag track. I don't typically use A6's as they just wear out to fast. Maybe I would buy some stickers if I could win some free ones but I'm not that talented lol

Nope! Really bummed They skipped Road America a few years back as well. I think I went to Blackhawk farms then instead. I can do more events if I stay in state though. No Road America with NARRA either, maybe something SCCA (do they even do time trial?). I drive to events so no W2W. I usually have my tires mounted before getting to the track because the tire mounting fee is at least double.
