Default Would you drive a high speed autocross or a track day on these tires?

I'm gearing up for a few track days and autocrossing this spring. I'm going to need tires. Would you run these? The price is certainly right. They'll be going on a 94 C4. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....Tire=84WR7ECDW

Why aren't you using a "square" setup of 275's all around?

That's what the car likes, and if you use the stock 9.5 inch rims all around you can rotate the tires, front to back and side to side to get the best track life out of them.

A C4 really needs at least a 275 section tire on the front or you will push like a pig and eat front tires in any type of track or autocross work.

I realize that if you have a 94 that might have come with the staggered setup (skinny 8.5 inch rims up front), but that pretty much sucks for handling and you really ought to get a set of 9.5's for the front anyway. The 9.5's were available with the Z07 or the Z51 package, so that's what I would suggest.

Default 340?

You might want to consider a tread compound softer than the " 340 ".

Maybe 200 to 250.

Thanks guys, I'm learning already! I'll look into the "square" set-up.

If you're just starting out or new with the car, those tires should be fine. You'll still have fun because you'll actually be able to take the tires to their limits and it will help you learn the car easier.

Going with 275's all around opens up a world of tire choices too. And if you look a the prices, 275's are a bunch cheaper than almost any other tire size. The reason is that there are lots of tires to choose from and the tire guys want to be competitive, so 275's are much less expensive than a lot of other tires.

The car has aftermarket A-mold knockoff wheels. I don't remember if they are 8.5" up front. The car is in storage, I can check this weekend. If I do go to 275's all around, what sidewall ratio should I consider?

If the car has 17x9.5 wheels on all 4 corners, you can use a 275/40-17 tire or even a 285/40-17. If the tire brand you settle on has a 295/35-17, that should also work on the 9.5" wheel.

The 340 treadwear rating would make the tire fairly hard. I would suggest looking at the Kumho XS or the NITTO NT05. These tires have treadwear ratings in the 200 areas and will be stickier when they gate some heat in them. I use the Nitto NT05 for track days and after a couple laps, they work very well. I can feel when they are ready to let go and will squeal a bit at that point. I paid $600 delivered to my house for a set of 275/40-17's from Discount Tire Direct.

Mine loves the 275 square set up

If they fit in the budget I'd get the Nitto. 340 treadware is borderline of being a little too hard. Shoot I forget what the treadware is on my stock Camaro - they are a higher then 340 treadware and they SUCK on the track
The corvette runs Hoosier R6, but as I was learning I used all kinds of different tires. I'm gonna find some streetish tire for a rain tire this year

Hands down one of the best dual purpose autocross/street tires on a budget. In the racing I do there is a 200 treadware rule and there are some VERY fast cars on these tires. Both these cars are driven by fast women on the Falkens:

I ran 340 treadwear tires all last year since they came with the car. The only thing that passed me was a nasty Porsche (on stickies), a 600hp Viper (on stickies) and 1 or 2 pesky E36 M3s (on stickies). This year I'll strike back with less crappy street tires, I think that'll be enough to take care of the M3s. Still had a blast on the 340s though, and if you're still slow, they won't hold you back. I passed many a Corvette with better rubber last year. I passed many a lot of things on better rubber, and I still could have cleaned up my driving to go faster yet on those bricks.
