Default Ideal coolant temp for roadrace 92

Hello all

I am in the process of overhauling my 92 this winter for mainly roadracing. I dont have much done to the motor but ARH headers and a hotcam kit. I am installing my Dewitts 2 row radiator this weekend and wondering if there was anything else I should do to maintain ideal racing temps? ECM fan reprogram,Thermostat,Manual overide switch etc?

Thanks

Oil coolers are always good on hot days /long sessions
Stick ? auto ? trans cooler . Mine would hover around 290 . (on a 15 -20 minute )

I think he's asking about coolant.

That 290* is your oil temp, right?

With the Dewitts and one working fan (long story) mine has seen 270 by the digital readout. That was a 100 degree day in the humidity at VIR. Found the debris that was partialy blocking the lower area and it never got higher than 260.

I don't have an oil cooler and a stock pan so I was seeing 290 on the oil temp.

Don't know about the new combo (road race oil pan), If I don't see the oil temps closer to the water temp I'll be adding an oil cooler. I only run 15 - 20 min sessions.

Well the radiator is a good idea. I'll tell you what I have for my dedicated C4 race car and you can pick up on that:

- dedicated oil cooler with its own fan. Lower oil temps equals lower temps overall. Manual switch to turn on and off.
- manual switch for secondary fan so I can run it when I want.
-160 degree thermostat with 8 drilled holes in it.
-air dam with large air opening boxed in to the rad a la stock car.
- hood vents on the top and side of the hood to get air out.
- water wetter.

with all this I still get 230 on hot days (70 degrees and up to hi 90's) with both fans running. If its below say 60 degrees F, I may run around 210 to 220 degrees. That's all pretty hot but normal for a C4 mostly I think because of the cramped engine bay. I don't run an LT1 motor so if you are, it would be a good thing to install a meziere electric water pump and get that GM thing out of there. Its really important to vent that engine bay.

I just finished an article on cooling systems. It should be out next month. I talked to a lot of engine builders and radiator people. The consensus is that you want the water temp between 210-dgrees and 220-degrees.

You can go higher but the bhp gain is minimal.

I have a similar set up in my 93 6pd lt-1. Lt headers, hot cam kit and injectors. I had the ecm programed for the cam and headers plus to turn on the fans at 175 degrees. I also placed in a lower temp thermostat. Stock the water temp. ran 230-240 even on cold days for a 30 min hpde. Now around 200-210 on a hot day.

Yes , oil temp . I figure if the oil stays reasonable it will help the water temp

Mine will run up between 200 and 220. I run 180 thermo, wash the radiator annually to remove any debris or dirt, run about 70% water and 30% e-glycol, and usually a bottle of Purple Ice.

I usually see 220 on my 92.

I have a manual override switch on the fans (very easy install).

Just a note on the manual switch - if you install one, you will get a code 28 (Quad Driver), no check engine light though.

Just ignore the code, clear it if you want. That Quad driver is just looking at voltages in the fan circuit.
