Default Houston newbie - Need a "Hi-po driving mentor"

hey there!

I got into my Z06 this past new year's day. I also own a Nissan 350z (automatic).

This is my first manual car. I have been learning how to drive the car as it should be on the street ( quickly, yet safely). I am still too damn scared of the car to redline it in 1st, and there's no where safe enough to drive above 100.

I have been working out the kinks with my car (got heads replaced under warranty, valve guide scare), new MPSS rears, etc.

I would like to know if anyone would be willing to mentor/hang out/orient me towards going to my first road course day at the tracks here in Houston or nearby in Texas.

I have come to realize that there's only so much I can learn from the internet and the rest comes with practice. Maybe an experienced instructor with some free time will be willing to trade some knowledge for wrench labor?

I'm an instructor for several groups here in Texas. PM me for specific info, and we'll get you oriented. Track time is addictive!

Why not sign-up for one of the local HPDE 's - novice level. Lots of great instructors included in the price. Try the Performance Driving School at TWS.

Also look into The Drivers Edge. They do some great HPDE stuff and that's where I started. They go down to Houston MSR a number of times during the year.

Why don't you start off with an auto-x just to get your feet wet?

They have an event every month. There is also a practice auto-x at the Texas A&M Sports Car Club first weekend of July. It's at an old airbase with plenty of room and nothing to hit but cones.

Houston is a hot-bed of track activity - lots of choices for track days most weekends with six good tracks within a three hour drive, seven if you throw in NOLA (New Orleans).

The Drivers Edge provides an excellent program for beginners with great instruction program. Their events tend to sell-out so you have to sign up weeks in advance:http://www.thedriversedge.net/02_tracks.htm

The performance driving school at TWS is also a good choice but the instructing is not as structured as with TDE: http://www.texasworldspeedway.com/

NASA Texas includes DE (driver's education) sessions at their events. You will also have an opportunity to watch the wheel to wheel sessions and work your way through the DE levels to Time Trials http://www.nasatx.com/events.php

As others have warned - track days are more addictive than crack and more expensive - you burn through money way faster!

Hope to see you out on track. PM if I can help.

Jim
