Default Wings Need it??????????

I have a old C-5 corvette that has to be a around the town car, auto
cross racer. 1/4 mile drag car, and high speed track car. Alot of duty
for one car.
I have some aero pieces on the vette including a spoiler in the rear.
My question---
Because of the different tasks I demand of my old vette should I
consider a wing for the rear????? I would think that 1/4 mile racing
I would lose mph. High speed autocross or track use it would help.
On the street a big negative.
I don't know what do you think??????????Thanks for your help.

Definitely no wing unless it's 100% road race car and has a fully functional front splitter IMHO. A C5 with no aero can tear up the track or auto-x course with no aero and like you said it would only hurt for drag racing.

I have a fully functional front splitter, just a small spoiler on the rear.
All my buddies tell me the same thing. Leave it alone.....

I have a C5 Z06 with a 61 inch carbon fiber wing with no front splitter I drive around town occasionally. Mostly the Z06 is used at the Homestead and Sebring tracks about 20+ days a year.

Does the wing work for me?... yes for both downforce and lateral stability as it has winglets that really work. I have yet to notice even a slight need for a front splitter on my car to be honest with speeds of 150 MPH.

I was just asked technical questions about my wing angle and all that stuff at Sebring by a person at an HPDE event. He told me he was going to spent $%,000 to get his car's downforce to produce massive amounts, and had computer programs and technicians working on it. I asked him how many HPDE events he has attended, and the answer was one. Nuff said.

For a guy that drives daily and wants to drag race and track the car occasionally, the wing is a total waste of money. More track time or hire an instructor is better money well spent.

Here's my website and my car/ wing if you scroll down towards the bottom... http://www.fishme.com/

Great and safe laps to everyone!

I have a track only C5Z that I drive to about 10 HPDE events per year. As I get faster I decided I need aero to be safer at speed, especially at Road Atlanta.....so I talked with MTI Racing and they suggested either a modified "tail" spoiler, like they used to run on their world challenge car,or a full wing that would use a quick connect system so it could be removed easily. They did suggest that adding rear downforce without adding some in the front would upset the balance of the car. These guys actually make their own parts and do their own wind tunnel testing on them.

There is a kid with a shop across from me who designs and builds his own wings and all sorts of other custom aero components.

http://ajhartmanracing.com/

Anyway he basically told me that if you just buy a wing and slap it on you are wasting your money. It's part of a system, like any other serious track car mod it must be balanced out and tuned by someone who knows what they are doing. So if you are casual about the sport and aren't going to spend the time to develop it, I'd say don't bother.

I am a big fan of aero on the c5! I raced the car 1 season without and the last 2 seasons with in Time Attack.
It is much more stable and easier to drive now. And with the right wing you won't loose much top end...
I just turned a new best on Mosport (1.29.6) a couple weeks ago😉

Thanks for all the good advise. Right now, I will not install a
wing.

Thank you sir! Not bad for an old vette that still sees street driving now and then hey
It's all thanks to my aero... Cheap COT wing off eBay and a homemade splitter.

I have a C6R wing on my C6Z that I road race often

The wing unbolts so it wont be an issue reducing 1/4 mile speed

Default Aero is good

A balanced car is critical, C5 or C6.

This is my C6 race car. Big rear wing and big front splitter, vented fenders, and hood, canards and side skirts.

It's amazing how stable this car is over 150mph.

The height of the wing is critical. You must have clean air.

Nice! Who did you get your canards from?

Are you coming to the Oct event on Mosport? I want to take a close look at your canards if you don't mind

I don't want to offend, in case you made those yourself, but the canards on the car a couple posts up are doing more harm than good. If they are an item that was purchased whomever produces them I have a feeling does not know much about aero.
Take them off and the car will go faster.
