For AutoX?

For ?

I've only tried one, but am very happy with it...

http://www.gforce.com/products/helmets/3028.php

It's the G-Force CFG.

It's light and very comfortable... relatively affordable... I chose it for it's light weight and HANS-friendly design... (At the time of purchase I thought I may be both Autocrossing and have an opportunity to drive a customer's dirt street stock...)

I use it w/ a CarbonX headsock and my old (c.1930) AO green glass goggles...

YMMV...

I hope to get in some track days soon, but for right now, it's limited to auto-cross.

I have a simpson Bandit and very happy with it....

Most Autox let you use motorcycle helmets, which I have plenty of, but I also do HPDE, and no motorcycle helmets are allowed.

I'd rather go with a dedicated helmet...BTW, when does the SA2010 rating get renewed?

Default Helmet

I've been researching the same thing, I am actually about to pull the plug on a G- force , its sa2010 , and seems that it will be perfect for when I do Auto-x , and hopefully some HPDE events .

I have said this in other threads: but make sure you try on the helmets first. They all have their unique quirks, and you might like the feel of one over another. Good luck with the search!

I really like my HJC AR-10II http://hjc-motorsports.com/HJCmotors...lmets/ar-10ll/

Although you only wear a helmet a short of amount of time during an autocross event getting one that fits is probably still the most important thing to consider. Bell, Simpson, Impact, G Force, etc all make good helmets at an affordable price point (~$300) that are great for autocross and are pretty good for track days. Most of them will have drillable mounting points for HANS or other restraint devices. The more track time you do lighter weight, and cooling become more important and add to the comfort of wearing the helmet. Then you need to consider the higher end helmets of those comapnies or just high end manufacturers like Stilo. When Earnhardt Jr won the 500 last month he was wearing a Stilo. Prices on high end helmets can make your butt pucker and most fall into the category of "Boy, I wish I could afford that."

Best way to choose one is to try them on. Low end helmets come sized small, medium and large. High end helmets come in regular hat sizes. They will all fit differently. A large from one manufacturer may feel more like a medium from another. Your helmet should fit you just right. You will have to decide on thin, thick or standard cheek pads or special cheek pads with speaker holes so you can hear an intercom. The helmet should be tight but not to tight. If somebody grabs it in the rear and tries to pivot it forward over your head it shouldn't come off. If it does then it doesn't fit. You can order on line but going to a motorsports store that has a good selection may be thing to do for your first helmet. The store I went to for my first helmet wouldn't let sell me one until I had tried on several (he special ordered 6 more than he had in the store for me to try) and had one that fit my head and couldn't be pulled off. Might have cost me $20 or $30 more buying from him but I knew I had a great helmet.

As odd as it sounds, most places don't have enough helmets in stock to "try" every model you like to find a good fit...

You can try to see about borrowing or test fitting at your local track, but this is what I really liked about using amazon... Doesn't fit right, send it back!

I've heard about the weight thing from a couple of guys....I've been looking at the Sparco WTX-7...I know, it's pricey, but light...

I've also heard that the Sparco's run a little small, even if they say the right size...this concerns me a bit, as I would buy their largest size...

The Bell M4 has one of the widest visor openings I've seen on a full face helmet. I hardly notice a difference (visibility wise) between that and my open face Bell.

Why do you want a full face for AutoX?
An open face is much more comfortable, no fogging, easier to put on/remove if you have glasses, not as warm, etc... Even the entry level Pyrotech or Zampf are plenty comfy, washable and do the job.

Because he said he also wants to do track days at some point , and buying two helmets likely isn't in his cards...

Even for HPDE, the SCCA issued an advisory a long time back against the use of full face helmets with cars equipped with airbags. If his car is stock, I would stick to an open face helmet.

I have a Pyrotect Airflow full face helmet that I bought a couple years ago. The Bell M4 I had was getting old in that the cheek pad foam was crumbling. The M4 didn't have replaceable pads but the Pyrotect does.

The Airflow model is very comfortable; it's light weight and the visor opening is just as wide as the Bell equal. My '87 doesn't have airbags so that wasn't a concern. But one thing about a full-face helmet and HPDE's is that the full-face with the visor down protects you from getting hit by marbles flying into the car. Most every event requires you run with windows down.

Pyrotect helmets are made in Bend OR.

I have a Bell BR1 and have been very happy with it. Very comfortable and it's adaptable if you ever want to use an airflow system on it. It also had a molded in recess for mounting the radio mic bar in it.

For AutoX? I would go buy the cheapest SA2010 that is comfortable. I fail to see the need to go spend a massive amount of money on a helmet that you are wearing for a few minutes at a time at the most.

Just my .02.
