What a shame about the Ricciardo disqualification!

now they just need to spend some time building a car that will legally last until the end of the race

I read that the fuel sensors in question were a standardized part supplied by the FIA?

If they are going to put that much at stake in it then they should run 2 so they have a backup

I agree with Nikki, they sound like the cars of the turbo era

I think the 2014 cars sound absolutely wicked, I just wish they would increase the rpm ceiling to make them louder.

Close. The part's spec is provided to a third party to manufacture and the another independent company tests them to make sure they are correct. Then they are provided to the teams.

This same method is used for the engine ECU ( by Microsoft - or at least it was until the new cars. I presume it's still thus.)

I think (as do many of the pit reporters) that the real issue is what they sound like on TV. In person, the overwhelming sound of the old NA exhaust is now replaced by all the whirring and whooshing and popping of the turbos and their associated components, as well as the sounds of the TIRES as they grab for traction at corner exits. One of my most fond racing memories comes from the days of the old IMSA races in the heyday of the Porsche 935. They were actually very quiet, engine-wise, but the sound and sight of the tires *spinning* and *smoking* at 80 or 100 mph as the turbo boost kicked in with the car still not properly pointed... David Hobbs was a absolute master of the things, btw, and a real joy to watch.

Maybe what Bernie and Todt need to do is borrow the "fake exhaust sounds" technology from BMW and Porsche and pipe it into the TV feed during the races. Heck, they could use recordings from last year's cars.

The only time I heard them live was at the Glen in 1976.

Read this for a dramatic race

I'm not sure what "power unit" most of the cars ran - anyone?

Same year the movie RUSH was based on

Engines were naturally aspirated Ford V8's, Flat 12 Ferrari, and I believe a V12

Also the year of the 6 wheeled Tyrrell

1st time I was @ an F1 race was in Canada
V8 Ford, V10 Renault, V12 Ferrari
You could hear your favorite car coming!
You could also hear them well off the island back at the hotel

the V10's never quite sounded right
especially when the traction control kicked in

Use to work CART races, still like the sound of those cars

Ditto. My wife and I used to attend quite a few CART races (Long Beach, Fontana, Laguna Seca, Nazareth, Las Vegas, Portland, San Jose (it was *really* nice when they ran in San Jose!) While they certainly weren't up to the noise levels of NA F1, they made a pretty great sound. At the 2007 Las Vegas Champ Car race Paul Stoddart was "exhibiting" the 2005 Minardi V10 cars at the Champ Car races during the breaks between practice sessions. The direct comparison was very cool.

Yes. All were 3.0 liter, normally aspirated. All the teams were using Ford Cosworth V8s except:

Ferrari (Lauda & Regazzoni) - Ferrari Flat 12
Brabham (Perkins & Pace) - Alfa Romeo Flat 12
Ligier (Lafitte) - Matra V12

Oh, the sound of that Matra v12!!

By the way, the Brabham team was owned by one Bernie Ecclestone at the time.
