Default Help me choose.

I intend to buy a c4 for track duty, and prefer newer. That said, I have found two candidates: a 96 LT4, but with base suspension and exhaust; and a 93 LT1 Z07 with headers. Both are ZF6.

So what are the pluses and minuses of each? Will it be less expensive to upgrade the suspension and exhasut of the 96, or the engine of the 93?

I am a newbie to the track, but I want a car that can be modded to grow with me as my skills improve.

Not sure what your budget is but I would seriously consider a C5. There are way more parts and support available since the platform shares a lot of components with the C6. In the last 7 years I think I have seen 2 C4's on the track as opposed to literally hundreds of C5 & C6.

Because it came up in another thread...keep in mind the rear brakes on your car have limited or no big brake options if you choose to go that route at some time in the future. These years have a single, dual action caliper whereas the earlier (and C5 C6) cars have a drum in disc set up that is crucial to the big brake market and keeping a parking brake.

My goals on the track are just to have fun, and to learn to use the full capability of the car. Competition is only with myself, not other drivers. I guess that would make me more a hobbyist than a racer.

Ignoring future mods, starting budget is under $10k, and the lower the better (to pay for those future mods).

Buy a C5. You'll spend way more getting the C4 chassis up to the C5's level. On top of that the C5's LS platform can make far more power and is more reliable and more parts availability. Also the C5 has the rear mounted transmission with better weight distribution. Oh and race companies are still making all kinds of track goodies for them.

As the others have noted the C5 is a lot better starting place, but of the two there is no question that the Z07 is a much better starting place between the C4's.

You'd have to replace the springs and sway bars on the 96 to get it from just flopping around. If the 96 has a lot lower mileage it might have some advantage. I think that by 96 all the cars got bigger brakes, but if not then the Z07 had them also.
