Default Prepping for my 1st AX in 44 Years

Sunday I'm going to see if I can still drive. The last time I did an AX I drove my 95 HP/3 spd Corvair. While doing prep on the Vette, I realized I've never floored the throttle while driving it. It has more than 4 times the HP of the 'Vair and I am nervous.

I intend to run in SSM. I can't do CAM since I have Kumho Ecstas XS tires with TW rating of 180. I guess this will be a recon to figure out what to do with the car over the winter. I'd like to get some time at a drag strip before the bad weather starts and see if I can match the previous owner's best of 11.55 at 122 mph.

Saturday we're going to a car show at the drive in in town. It's the one that was cinematically destroyed in the movie "Twister". The car will be distinctive since I'll have the AX number and class on the doors to go with the 4-point roll bar and Corbeau seats.

Hopefully I won't embarrass the Corvette Brotherhood (which includes the ladies).

Your tires will tell you when you overstep your bounds on that right foot!!!

Take your first run a little slower, focus on the line, and see how the car feels, then push harder and harder..

If you are running SCCA, register as Novice, I think your break from action should excuse your classing..

Remember you have to work at autox events. At my age I'm done with standing out on the lot all day for 5 minutes of seat time.

That's why you run NCCC events! No working! And the event is much smoother and quicker!

I hadn't considered NCCC events. I'll have to get involved next season.

Long day, unskilled driver and car with poor set up. You know you're having fun when there are pieces of tire rubber on the consol. I have a lot to learn and a lot of work to get the car competitive. It was a glorious day.

Default Autocross is like...

Autocross is like sex and bicycles...

It's not that you forget how to do it, it's just that if you don't do it very often, you aren't very good at it....

It will all come back in time. Hang in there and remember it's supposed to be fun...

There are some NCCC events that require participants to work. If the club doesn't have enough members to work the courses they assign people just like SCCA does. They put a notice in the flyer so you will know ahead of time. If you don't like it you don't get to run. Besides working the course helps provide a good view of what and what not to do in certain locations unless you are not capable of learning from other people's mistakes.

This was well run by excellent people. I made a huge mistake by not walking the course when it was reversed in the afternoon. Not to be repeated. The brakes were terribly weak and I pushed too hard in the 180 and 360 turns - understeered like a sled on ice. Gosh, it was fun.

Does this look like too much body roll?
