Default RideTech outnumbers all at the “Dual In The Desert”

Another great year of Goodguys’ Autocross events has come to an end. No better way to end the season than a beautiful weekend at Westworld in Scottsdale, Arizona. Great weather, awesome event staff, and stiff competition all collided for the best season finale in years. The RideTech equipped rides were out in staggering numbers this year with everyone fighting for the final 12 shootout spots. This year’s shootout dubbed the “Duel in The Desert” was set for a thirty two car field, twenty of the thirty two had already earned their spots throughout the season. The final twelve spots were filled Friday at four o’clock. RideTech shocks were on half of the thirty two qualified rides. Saturday morning the grid qualifications started at 9 A.M., and by noon the grid was set and the realness of the whole event began to set in. The “Duel” kicked off at 1 P.M. The first round already had some big names going head to head… Pozzi-Dusold…. Smitty-Bertelsen…. Hobagh-Herrick…. Burman-Ballard…. Popp-Schneider…. Voelkel-Farrington…. Josh Leisinger-Jared Leisinger…. & Maier-MacGregor…. were just a few of the battles that took place in just the first eliminations. Once the plume of tire smoke and line powder had settled, RideTech was still the suspension majority leader.

ROUND TWO!!! First race… two well-known RideTech Nation racers from opposite sides of the country. In one corner Mary Pozzi and her second generation Camaro were ready to do battle against Chris Smith in the Smitty’s C10. Mary laid down a 71.43 to Chris’s 74.07, west coast with the win. The fourth race of the second round placed another pair of RideTech Nation racers together. Rodney Prouty’s first generation Camaro against Roger Burman’s LS powered Dodge Dart. Roger put down a 72.375 to knock Prouty’s 73.709 back to the pits. The seventh race of the round was Josh Leisinger in the Summit Racing “Crusher” Camaro against Robbie Unser in the Speedway Motors Nova. Josh was forced to lay waste to his own little brother in round one and didn’t let up when it came to a racing family like the Unsers. Josh laid down a 71.655 to overtake Unser’s 72.981. Thirty two entered and only eight remain. RideTech still outnumbered the competitors.

ROUND THREE!!! Marry Pozzi took a win in the first race after Scott Fraser was unable to get the Cobra’s rear axle back together in time to race. The second race was Brian Hobaugh against Roger Burman. Hobaugh’s years of experience driving his dad’s Corvette were just to much for Roger Burman and the Dart. Race number three was last year’s returning champion Danny Popp, against Tyler Powell’s RideTech Corvette. As Tyler tried to top Danny’s 74.758 he pushed a little too hard and ended up off track giving Danny the win. Finishing off the third round was Josh Leisinger and the Summit Racing “Crusher II” Corvette against west coast super star Mike Maier’s Ford Mustang. Josh’s RideTech equipped Corvette put down the fastest time of the round with a 70.721 overtaking Maier’s 71.579. Down to four, and RideTech TQ CoilOvers are on two of them.

ROUND FOUR!!! Eleven time SCCA champion Marry Pozzi against Brian Hobaugh and Danny Popp against Josh Leisinger. Hobaugh narrowly overtook Pozzi in the first race leading up to the possibility of a rematch of last years Hobaugh-Popp shoot out final. Popp was ready for that rematch and quickly put an end to Josh’s hopes of a first place finish. Leisinger and Pozzi went on to battle for the third place spot ultimately being taken by Josh.

FINAL ROUND! The stage was set. Last years dramatic battle of Popp vs Hobaugh was reincarnated in Scottsdale. Both men have been racing the Corvettes that their fathers had bought to race many years ago. Both men brought up annihilating little orange cones in parking lots across the U.S. Midwestern SCCA star Danny Popp against West Coast SCCA Pro Brian Hobaugh. Last year Hobaugh clipped a cone in the final giving Danny the win. Would Danny be able to take the title two years in a row? Has the one cone from last year haunted Hobaugh’s dreams? Well Hobaugh immediately stepped up and put the hammer down. That was all she wrote. Popp couldn’t overtake the West Coast native. Until next year?????

How exactly does the duel portion work? I assume a practice/timed portion to set a baseline time then are people matched by times and then each takes a run? the fastest person from that run gets the win/advance?
